The Amish have something everybody needs (and I don't just mean dressy pants in which they can do real work). They have a custom called rumspringa in which they go into the outside world without the restrictions of their religion, and find out each for himself whether he wants to place those restrictions upon him.
Sanctioned by my (former?) religion or not, it is definitely time for my own personal rumspringa. Those things about religion which have always seemed to be wellsprings of strength on which I could draw have become pools of murky water in which I am drowning.
Those things about myself which I knew so thoroughly I didn't even need to question them are gone -- what is left that is me?
