Westward Ho!

We are spending a cool and rainy weekend indoors after emergency birthday week and our rushed drive to Michigan for our friend Melanie's wedding. It was emergency birthday week because I picked up, as the cheapest 30th birthday party decoration, a police-emergency type cordon to go around the apartment, saying "Danger! 30th birthday in progress." It was just as well to have warnings, as not only did I get a large peanut butter cake iced by Julian with chocolate buttercream, but also a strawberry chocolate cake from our friend Sandra and a chocolate pie from Liz. My birthday meal was a lamb couscous, another Paula wolfert in the couscoussier, and I got fun gifts (we've been watching Dexter avidly since.)

I nabbed Julian from a half day at work on Thursday and we drove to Rochester to spend the night with Jamie and Crystal. We had Dibella's subs for dinner (Godfather for myself, Dagwood for Julian) and happily chatted past bedtime.

We woke for breakfast burritos then made for Niagara Falls hoping for a picnic lunch. It was bitterly cold though, and remarkably we saw two brides freezing in wedding dresses! The falls, as always, were a magnificent sight. Our trip across Canada was done by nightfall, in time to find a hotel just south of Detroit- dinner was down the street at a nice Mexican joint called Blue Margarita.

Melanie had fair and sunny weather for her wedding day, and a beautiful ceremony at a church in Newport. Another vet school friend Annette was there, so we shared lunch at Panera. The reception was just like old times catching up with Mel, Annette, and Michelle, and with an inviting open bar near our table we were thankful our hotel for the night was in walking distance. The food was good too, succulent chicken and beef, appetising vegetables and a tasty cake.

Sunday was an early start to reach Wellsville, NY for a long overdue catch up with family. We had a nice home cooked meal of chicken presents, carrots and spinach salad followed by a joint German Chocolate birthday cake; my fourth birthday cake - is this one per ten years plus "one to grow on"? We exchanged gifts after dinner and recieved a very attractive ceramic casserole dish with matching pitcher and a set of Luminescence mouth blown wine glasses.
