The Buckin' Broncho(pneumonia)

Jul 08, 2010 00:20

I had my first encounter with the word deglutition.

Recently, I provided some support to my friend in medical school. He had a deadline for a paper on several topics. So, I jumped in to pull together some summarized contribution on that old standby topic bronchopneumonia.

As a rule, bronchopneumonia (inflammation
of the terminal bronchus and the air-vesicles
that make up a pulmonary lobule) is a secondary
infection met under the circumstances of a
sequence of infectious fevers (e.g., scarlet fever,
diptheria, measles), cases of aspiration or
deglutition pneumonia (when a patient has
swallowed a particle that reaches the smaller
tubes and results in stoppage and inflammation),
or tubercles bacillus (TB).
Yep. I ventured into the anatomical pathology and dove into the stenosis. And I eventually had something worth submitting toward his cause.

Ultimately, it helped. That was the most I could hope for.

Last month, I spent most of a weekend on Galveston Island for my buddy’s graduation from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston School of Medicine. What a moment of triumph that was for him...from so much tribulation with his own medical problems, his wife's cancer, and the impact of hurricane Ike on his home, schooling, and life.

The commencement address was given by Vice Admiral Regina M. Benjamin, MD, MBA, Surgeon General of the United States Public Health Service. She has an impressive resumé of helping those in need. Unfortunately, her list of skills and talents does not include public speaking. But, the content was good.

After receiving a cylinder that represented the diploma (real diplomas are provided later), quite a number of graduates were hooded by family members who are also doctors. The other graduates were hooded by members of the faculty.

A swell of emotion enveloped the entire venue into a standing ovation when a posthumous degree was presented to the parents of a deceased student. Such a somber and sobering note in the midst of the celebratory atmosphere.
