Yesterday was a public holiday, so I treated it like a Sunday & went for a good long walk. I walked from the northernmost end of King St to its southernmost end at St Peter's Station - about 3 kilometres. Add another kilometre wandering backstreets, and then the return trip & I figure I did about 7 ks.
Apart from the first 12 blocks - my regular walk to Newtown station, I wasn't walking briskly, there was too much to see and enjoy. South King St is not as old as the northern and middle sections, starting about 1900 instead of 1880s. However, it's been fairly run down and untrendy until very recently, so there much more of the old ratbaggy buildings, plus more ethnic variety.
Once past the cafes and Thai restuarants of the 'eat street' main part of King St, there is a cornucopia of shbby and not so shabby shops: second-hand and repro furniture - 'deco to disco' - as one shop puts it, retro fashion boutiques, little fashion designers, collectables of all ages and varieties, vinyl, cds and dvds, books old & new, art galleries, jewellery galleries, buttons, beads and bags - the emphasis is on originality and variety, There are of course cafes & restaurants, but they don't dominate the street. It really is a browser's paradise.
And a snapper's. I remembered to take my camera because one more thing that South King St has over the centre and north is
murals. More and bigger than I'd documented so far. I also took pics of yet more Art Deco pubs, and interesting building cornices and rooflines. They'll go up on my Flick'r page later.
