Ranulf had spent the entire night before the moon with Augustin, laying with him in the couch. He had tucked Augustin's head beneath his chin as they had slept, leaning in now and then to nudge at his neck. It made things a little more real, a little easier to bear.
The moon came as it always did, with an immense amount of relief and no small amount of pain. He had remained close to Augustin the entire time, and after they had shifted back into wolves, he lead his pack of two out into the city. It was an onslaught of scents and sounds, most of them familiar. Stella and Geoffrey, and the kids, were to the south. Stella was most certainly in heat, but the only thing on Ranulf's mind was Augustin.
They started out slow, trotting through the city, sniffing the air. It had been a long time since he'd spent a moon in a city. Last time, it had been an accident and Willem had kept them all close at hand, miserable and claustrophobic in an alley. This was much better, and as they passed the house where he was living with Willem, he darted closer and nipped Ranulf's shoulder.
He lifted his head and sniffed, catching Willem's scent and then pelting off in the direction it led. It wound around a little and he followed it happily until the scent of fear and aggression overpowered everything and he broke into a run, tearing into the backyard and throwing himself between Willem and the other wolves. They were big, too strong for the two of them. Ranulf had to show up soon...
Ranulf growled at the house, his nostrils flaring and his teeth bared. He was angry, but all of the anger had, for so long, centered around the fact that Augustin had been taken away from him. Now that he had him back...well...
He jerked his head up as Augustin ran off, hesitating a moment before tearing after him. It was a matter of minutes before the familiar scent changed completely, and the hair across his shoulders stood on end. Someone was in trouble, and Augustin was there.
The younger wolves hesitated when Augustin appeared, but only for a moment. He was old and he smelled it, but he was small, wiry, more speed than strength. If they could land a blow on him, he would be down. Willem stepped up beside him, bristling, a low snarl rumbling in his chest. They would go down together, at least.
There was another crash and the powerful scent of a very old wolf. Ranulf. One of the younger wolves turned to face the new threat and Willem launched himself at him, powerful jaws closing around his throat.
