Re: Gel Part 1 (4/?) anonymous June 16 2011, 01:10:04 UTC
Her tormentor was oddly quiet as she darted down the new hallway she’d stumbled upon. Without his stimulus, Chell finally felt the burning in her body, the ache as oppressive as the former Core, and GLaDOS before him. Her pace slowed to a crawl, then stopped altogether as the dark haired woman paused to lean against the wall.

… Wheatley… still liked her?

“Gotcha!” The wall moved, and Chell bolted on instinct. “Oh come on luv, that wasn’t fair.” Wheatley said, and from behind her, Chell heard what sounded like the wall being crushed by multiple wires, wires that should have been crushing her. “Hold still for a bit, please? I just want to get a few pictures for your,” He chuckled and Chell leaped over some rubble in her way, “File.”

“That creep,” GLaDOS growled as Wheatley went quiet once more. Chell kept running down the hall, a twist in the path up ahead. “Keep moving, there should be some stairs up ahead. If we can just get to-“

“That’s enough out of you!” Wheatley shouted, and from the corner of her eyes Chell saw a bright light headed her way. Chell jumped out of the way of the laser as it impacted the wall, blocking the previous path she was trying to take. As she ran the other way and turned down the corner she had previously passed, GLaDOS swore.

“What is he thinking?!” She shouted at the top of her presumably now-poisonous lungs. “Bringing test objects out of the test chambers?! Is he insane?”

“I CAN STILL HEAR YOU GLADOS!” Wheatley shouted, and another laser interrupted Chell’s path. She jumped over this one, only for her sweat to turn cold on her skin as she heard it sizzle her way. She turned the corner opposite the laser and prayed Wheatley wouldn’t still chase after her with it. As she ran down the hall, she heard the walls she had passed shifting, and braced herself for the laser to reappear on her path. But she kept running. As she entered a section with dimmed, flickering lights, she paused, waiting, listening. Nothing happened. Still tense, she focused on catching her breath. He'd be back any moment now...

GLaDOS was quiet now, as Chell bent over, holding her stomach to help her breathing. As Chell got her breathing under control, GLaDOS whispered.

“Chell?”

The dark-haired woman glanced at the AI program. Chell nodded her head in acknowledgement. GLaDOS spoke again.

“I think he’s playing with us.”

Chell froze. She straightened up, holding the portal gun with both hands. Her blood felt as cold as her clothing did soaked in water. Now, she understood. The intercom turned on with a screech and Chell cringed, instinctively raising her arms to cover her ears.

“Theeeeere you are,” Wheatley spoke. “I was looking all over for you…”

Chell ran again.

Something dropped from the ceiling around the corner. Chell saw a flash of red light and immediately stopped. She inched closer to the corner, trying to see where the turret was placed. The red light immediately narrowed in on her, and Chell pulled away around the wall as the bullets flew. She’d seen what she needed to though.

The turret was dead center in the hallway. No way she could just sneak around it.

“Well, luv, it looks like this is the end of the line for you~!” Chell fought to keep her neutral expression even at Wheatley’s chilling words. She wasn’t completely successful. “Why don’t you just give it up now? Stop running. Take a break. Finish the damn test. I’ll even let you take a nap. Maybe have some cake. Just stop running.” The desperation in Wheatley’s voice reminded her of the pain in her body once more… How cold she was, soaked to the bone… Maybe she should stop… There was no way they were going to reach him like this. Or maybe the exhaustion was getting to her.

“Please?” Wheatley said.

Chell glanced at the wall across from the turret and watched as the red laser disappeared as the turret fell into sleep mode. Her eyelids were growing heavier the longer she stayed still. She had to get moving before she passed out completely!

Oh she did not want to pass out right now.

“Chell!” GLaDOS shouted, and Chell immediately snapped back to reality, readjusting herself before she could fall to the ground in the path of the turret. She straightened up, and as she did, she saw what GLaDOS probably saw.

There was a pipe full of a certain white liquid lining the top of the wall. It was dented and leaking conversion gel in strands all around the top of the wall. Chell took a cautious step away from the wall, and saw that the thick streak of conversion gel went all the way down the hallway. How had she not noticed that before? Oh yeah, probably because she was running for her life-

“I see you.” Chell ducked back behind the wall for cover.

“Luv,” Wheatley said. “Are you still trying to run?” Chell began to glance around for a good portal spot even as he spoke. “C’mon, it was fun while it lasted. You need to rest, then we can go back to testing!”

For a brief moment, Chell’s expression changed. Then it hardened back into stone, and she shot at the white panel she spotted lying on the ground. Then, as Wheatley began to stammer anew, she dodged back out from behind the wall and spot a portal just above the turret. She returned to the panel.

“Luv, please, I’m sorry, it’s this damned itch! Please, please, just help me out here, you’ve always helped me before...” Wheatley paused, as did Chell.

“No,” Wheatley said in disgust. “Couldn’t say it with a straight face.”

Hearing the walls creak behind her, Chell jumped through the portal, knocking the turret off its peds. As it screamed and fired, Chell took off running again.

“Keep moving, keep moving!” GLaDOS shouted. “Don’t stop now!”

“I told you to shut up!” Wheatley shouted. One thing at a time Chell! The girl repeated to herself, forcing herself to stay focused on running, not on the two AI’s conversation.

She threw open a door, and found herself faced by stairs. Finally!

“You need to go u-“ A burning hot laser seared by Chell’s elbow and she jerked away, just narrowly keeping the potato-bound AI out of the path of the laser.

“Yeah!” Wheatley shouted, and Chell could almost imagine him pumping his fists in triumph. “That’ll teach you, you stupid spud! Hey, wait, Chell, where are you going!?”

Chell didn’t slow down for him. She’d seen what he hadn’t in his excitement: GLaDOS flickering her one eye as if in a wink. She kept running up the stairs, ignoring everything Wheatley said.

One thing at a time Chell, she repeated. One thing at a time.

“I don’t get it.” Wheatley asked. “Why are you running? Do you even know?”

Of course she knew why she was running. If she didn’t unseat this maniac from GLaDOS’ throne, they were all going to die. It was as simple as that. And more than that, she wanted…

One thing at a time Chell.

“Are you looking for me?”

Chell paused on the step, one leg raising to take the next step. She didn’t look at his camera, which she knew was doubtlessly pointed directly at her. She closed her eyes and inhaled the recycled air deeply into her lungs, then began to climb up the stairs again.

From above, Wheatley began to sputter. “I-I don’t believe this! After all I’ve done for you! After all the sacrifices I’ve made- The pain I’ve been through- You want to take away the only thing that ever made me happy?!”

Fire flashed onto Chell’s face. She paused to look for the camera, and immediately spotted it just above her… On a portalable surface. Moron, she told him silently as she raised her portal gun. Stupid, sexy, evil moron, fake-friend moron, heartbreaker moron. She never thought she could hate anyone more than she did GLaDOS… But Wheatley just took stole first place.

She pulled the trigger on the portal gun, firing a blue and orange portal in quick succession. The camera was dislodged, and crashed down the stairs into the unknown. Chell stood defiant, then put her portal gun down.

Wheatley was silent for a long moment. “Alright then,” He said after a long moment. “Have it your way, Chell. May the best man win. Er, bot. May the best bot win. And it’ll be me. I’m the only bot here, after all.” As Wheatley stammered and cackled, Chell resumed her trek up the stairs.

She was getting her best friend back. She owed him that, at least, for… For everything.

Chell climbed up one final flight of stairs, then paused. No more stairs, and only one door. Well, there were spaces where stairs should be, but apparently Wheatley wanted her to stop here. The woman glanced at the potato, then stepped towards the door.

Behind her, something creaked. On human instinct she turned to look down at where she’d been running, only to stagger back as the stairs she had been climbing slipped into the void. From somewhere above, Chell heard Wheatley chuckle.

“Took you long enough to get here, didn’t you?” He exhaled long and leisurely, and another clear image of him leaning back in GLaDOS’ chair appeared unbidden to her. “But, now, you’re here. No way to go but in. So! Carry on trying to find and kill me, you ungrateful little-“

The intercom cut off, and Chell looked at GLaDOS.

If the AI could’ve, she would have shrugged her shoulders. “It’s clearly a trap, but we don’t have much of a choice right now.”

Automatically Chell glanced at the floor. White, clearly capable of holding a portal. Chell then glanced above her. A-ha! She grinned. A nice little platform, just waiting for her to portal up there. Chell then paused, looking between the door before her, and the platform above her. Chell looked at the potato again.

GLaDOS didn’t speak. Chell took the chance. She portaled the wall above the platform, then hit the floor with another portal. She poked her head through the portal, glancing around the area to make sure she’d land correctly. Then, with one more glance at the door, she jumped through.

She found herself standing on more grating, in front of another door. Chell paused a moment, waiting for Wheatley to say something… Or crumble the platform she was standing on. Actually, why hadn’t he crumbled the stairs when she was climbing up them? Why did he go to all the trouble of creating a trap by destroying the stairs instead of killing her the moment he realized she wanted to take away his power?

This was suddenly seeming like a very, very bad idea. She just couldn’t figure out why.

“Be careful, Chell.” GLaDOS said. “Something’s not right about this.”

Chell nodded, then turned towards the door. She walked up to it, her boots echoing in the stairwell. Placing her hand on the doorknob, she suddenly froze. What if the door was locked? Admittedly, none of the other doors in this place were locked, but what if Wheatley wanted to lure her up here, wait till she got her hopes up, and then killed her?

She took the chance. She turned the knob, it moved, and slowly, Chell opened the door.

Wheatley gave her a bright, devious grin.

“Hey~” He said, winking under his safety visor.

Op here - I am really enjoying this! you write the action sequences and Chell's thoughts so well, and ooh, the constant foreshadowing of the conversion gel...

And you're right, he is a stupid sexy evil heartbreaker moron.

Before she could stop herself, Chell screamed, and slammed the door on Wheatley’s face. Then she paused, and stepped backwards against the railing. Her colorless eyes remained focused on the doorknob… Had that really…?

The doorknob turned. From behind the door, Wheatley said, “Hey, relax, it’s just me. Don’t tell me you’re afraid of little ol’ Wheatley already~”

As his chuckles echoed in Chell’s ears, the woman didn’t waste another moment. She dove for the portal she’d left up by the door and landed on the original platform. Above her, the door opened, and Wheatley called out, “You really don’t want to go in there… You aren’t gonna like what you fiiiiiiind~”

Chell ran inside anyway.

It was dark. Chell slowed her run to a walk. She glanced around the room, doing her usual customary scan of the premises, then looked up. There were three platforms above her, each growing smaller as they went higher, the top one connected to the wall in a manner that gave Chell an unreasonable amount of hope. She forced that to the side as she stepped farther into the room.

Something bright lunged at her from the side and she yelped, dodging out of the way. She landed on her hands and knees, and inhaled. The thing that had lunged at her let out a human growl, and she rolled out of the way as it lunged. She forced herself to her feet and stood in a ready position, searching the darkness for what attacked her.

Something slammed into her back, knocking Chell to the floor. Chell let out another cry, and with strength she hadn’t realized she still had, rolled onto her back, bringing her attacker along with it. Distantly she realized that at some point she’d dropped GLaDOS, that much was obvious from her angry screams, but the portal gun couldn’t help her now. She stood, then yelped as the bright being lunged at her again, bringing her back to the ground. Clenching her eyes shut to block out the brilliant light the being was emitting, Chell balled her hand into a fist.

Something warm clutched her right breast under her still soaked shirt. Chell’s mind ground to a halt.

The warm… Hand? It had to be a hand, rotated her breast in a gentle circle, causing the slender woman to arch off the floor in surprise and… That lightning in her veins… The being chuckled, and moved its hand away from her breast. Two nimble fingers trailed over her breast, as if searching for something. Chell inhaled sharper as the fingers found her partially erect nipple, then gasped as they began to play with it, rubbing it, circling it, even pulling on it a little. Chell found herself arching and gasping under the warm hands. Her fisted hand fell back down over her head, grasping at nothing. Without realizing it, Chell let out a little moan, her lips parting in a content sight. This was…

“STOP THAT NOW!” GLaDOS shouted. Chell snapped back to reality. What was she doing?! Being touched in a Bad Place by some… Some kind of energy… Chell cracked her eyes open a little, trying to see who or what was touching her like some kind of…

Wheatley.

Chell’s knee buried itself in the stomach of Wheatley’s image. With a grunt the glowing copycat vanished, and Chell rolled to grab the portal gun. As she stood up from her crouch, the lights came on.

“I knew you’d do that,” Wheatley grumbled from somewhere near. Chell looked towards the source, and found herself faced with another monitor, this one abnormally oversized. She straightened up further, watching the human-sized monster with wary eyes. He didn’t seem to be paying her any attention, actually. “How am I going to spend any time with a naïve brain-damaged young damsel if Mama Bear keeps getting in my way?”

“You were using experimental, untested Hard Light Hologram technology to molest her,” GLaDOS nearly shouted. “Look at what you did to her clothes! You would have set them on fire and her along with them if she hadn’t been still wet, you moron!”

“I! AM NOT! A MORON!” Wheatley shouted, getting even closer to the screen he was watching them from. Chell ignored him, secretly thankful he wasn’t shouting that at her. She chose to examine what he did to her clothes instead-- oh my god. The blood drained from her face. Her clothes were scorched wherever the… hologram had touched her. The shirt covering her breast he had been so tenderly caressing was so burnt it almost fell apart when she poked it. Chell gulped. Had it not been for her bra, that would have…

“Besides, I’m not so rude to as to use potentially dangerous technology that’s might possibly set someone on fire without some kind of lubricant on hand…” He looked suggestively to the side of the screen, and Chell obediently followed his gaze. She blinked at the sight of the dripping tube of conversion gel and the pool of hardened white fluid underneath it. Chell tilted her head to the side. There was a metaphor in there somewhere that she wasn’t capable of picking up at the moment, so she put it aside for the moment.

GLaDOS, if she was capable of it, probably would have facepalmed at the comment and visual. “The conversion gel? Really? For all you know that’s flammable too!”

A faux innocent look crossed Wheatley’s face, and he shifted in his throne enough to prop his chin up on the armrest. “Conversion gel? Is that what you call it? Funny, I could have sworn it had another na-“

“Wheatley,” GLaDOS said.

Wheatley scowled, giving the potato a look that suggested to Chell he was planning on making mashed potatoes very soon. She cupped the top of the potato protectively, avoiding the metal spike the potato was stuck on, and gave Wheatley a carefully blank expression. For the first time Wheatley seemed to notice her, and he groaned, swinging a long leg over the side of the throne.

“You’re just jealous I thought of it first,” Wheatley said.

For the first time in a long time, Chell was struck dumb. She once again broke her blank expression, tilting her head to the side as if to ask him ‘WHY?!’

GLaDOS didn’t say anything for a very long moment. “That’s not the point!” She finally shouted, and Chell forced the blank expression back on her face.

She really didn’t need to know that about GLaDOS…

Wow, that got funny really fast... That was not part of the original plan. I think I need sleep. Also, OP, I hope you don't mind the hologram bit... I would have used wires or some such, but that would have been much harder for Chell to untangle herself from and I kinda need her to be able to use her legs for the end of Part 1. GLaDOS is also surprising me... I should have focused more on keeping her in character. And I'm still not completely happy with Wheatley... I can't find many good reference materials for a situation like this to use as a basis.

(Time skip)

HOLY COW how long have I been out? Yeah, I'm sending this message and going to bed for real, it's only almost six. ._. G'night everyone who reads this message...

Not OP, but I absolutely loved the hologram, heck, this entire fill. Definitely looking forward to the rest of it.

It's totally about 4:30 here. I was planning on sleeping early. Heck even my nocturnal brother has gone to bed...

Authornon again... Well, I've hit a bit of a wall... In three ways, two with writing, one with real life.

The first problem is, well, I've hit a block. The reason for that is the second problem: I had a nice outline in my head for this story and then that stupid sexy heartbreaker moron Wheatley screwed it all up. Now I have no idea how to end this without it being a horrible anti-climax or being near impossible to write. This is a pit I've climbed out of before, however, I just need to keep writing.

The other problem is a bit... harder to get through. My family switched to Comcast-based internet a few months back because it was cheaper and faster. Yeah, it's also VERY unreliable. It dies occasionally and about once a month, for a few days it almost doesn't work. It took three minutes for this page to load completely, not including it getting pissy at me when I tried to click this window and went 'not responding', so I had to wait another thirty seconds for it to calm down. It would've taken less than three seconds for it to load had it wanted to work. I shit you not. Luckily it worked long enough for me to rip the song I was using for background music off of Youtube, so there's that.

Now... Back to trying to break the block.
