After a few minutes of trial and error, and the mutual realization that the hand-guiding method of education is perhaps not as efficient as it could be (thought it has clear advantages), they manage to create a spark that ignites some of the tinder. “Ah! You did it!” he proclaims joyfully, wrapping his arms around her tightly in a congratulatory hug almost instinctively. She turns her head ever-so-slightly to beam at him, and he realizes for the first time just how close they are: his head is actually resting on her shoulder, the front of his body flush against her, and his arms still encircling her. “Good job,” he reaffirms in a more restrained tone. Slowly, he pulls his arms from her torso and starts to scoot backwards, to give her some room. However, she places her hands on his wrists, with a tender sort of firmness that stops him immediately. For a moment, he is speechless. “Are you sure?” he blurts when he regains his voice. Eyes closed, she nods and relaxes against him. Well, if it’s what she wants….

He’s not sure how long they spend just looking at the campfire in silence, but he’s surprised to find it isn’t awkward at all. It’s too good to be true, and any minute now he’s sure he’s going to ruin it, just like he always ruins any potentially good situation on the relationship front, he just knows it.

“You know,” he starts, finally, unable to stop himself despite being sure that this sentence will be a kamikaze tailspin, “if I could choose anyone to be wandering around looking for civilization with…” She turns her head to look at him to hear the next part. “I’m glad it’s you.” That is not even a logical end to that statement, what is he thinking-

She smiles so wide her eyes close, and then squeezes his hand and nods.
“Oh,” he mumbles. “Thank you.” She squeezes his hand again.

Eventually, he falls asleep, with her still in his arms, and he does so before she does. So he doesn’t notice when she gently, sneakily kisses him on the cheek as he sleeps.

Holy cute. Anon, are you trying to kill me from sweetness overload? Because I think it's working.

OP here -- God, authornon, I couldn't have asked for a better fill.

Marry me and we'll have a little boy and we'll name him Doug, and we can set him up with a nice girl named Chell. <333

I love it, well done.

And it's a funny moment that Doug worries about the Cube complaining.

Writeanon, I confess I never even considered shipping Chell/Doug before this.
Consider me a convert.
This fill is wonderfully sweet and just a tiny bit sad, which is exactly what something involving those two should be. I loved it.
Thank you for writing. ~<3
