I've got a friend who is an English Major and a darn good editor, so I decided to get her to start helping me whip my story into a publishable book. Until she pointed out some key points, I thought I was above and beyond writer's my age. Ha! How wrong I was. I've openly criticized Christopher Paolini for his Inheritance Cycle, and my "Editor" pointed out that I had already made some of his same mistakes. I wasn't a culprit of purple prose, or laughable dialogue... instead I broke a rule that I never realized I broke.
My friend pointed out info dumps.
Info dumps! Dear God! The more I read, the more I realized there were info dumps hidden in each chapter! Little bits of the background and history that were carelessly tossed in there instead of seamlessly hidden in a conversation or event. Thankfully I have a friend who isn't afraid of showing me my faults as a writer, and she doesn't pull any punches either! She tells me exactly how it is.
Her efforts have saved this novel.
Thank you!
