Why Dumbledore REALLY trusted Snape?
My musings on Snape.
Okay, the more I think about it, the less likely it seems that Dumbledore trusted Snape just because he said he was 'sorry' that he gave Voldemort information that resulted in the Potters deaths.
I think there HAS to be another reason, perhaps one that Dumbledore did not choose to divulge to Harry, and after reading about the 'missing line' form the UK edition of HBP, this is my guess:
The missing line in the UK HBP is during the conversation between Dumbledore & Draco in the Astronomy tower. The missing line is bolded:
"I can help you, Draco." "No, you can't," said Malfoy, his wand shaking very badly indeed. "Nobody can. He told me to do it or he'd kill me. I've got no choice." "He cannot kill you if you are already dead. Come over to the right side, Draco, and we can hide you more completely than you can possibly imagine."
To me that seems like a clue that someone has already come over to the right side, and been hidden through "death".
Couldn't it be Regulus (aka R.A.B)? Given that all we know about his 'death' is:
1.) That it occurred around the same time period as the Potters died, and Snape allegedly turned to the good side.
and
2.) He wasn't important enough to be killed by Voldemort himself.
(And maybe 3.) he stole part of Voldie's soul!)
So, from this, it seems possible that the person assigned to kill Regulus was none other than... Snape! And perhaps Snape proved his allegiance to Dumbledore by NOT killing Regulus, but instead helping to fake his death? There do seem to be a couple of Draco-Regulus parallels - They're both Pureblood Slytherins who got in too deep.
Therefore, Regulus is alive and well and living under the Pseudonym of Stubby Boardman.
Of course, that raises problems such as:
1. Why was Harry able to inherit Grimmauld Place?
2. Why didn't Regulus tell Dumbledore he stole part of Voldie's soul?
I still think it's a possibility, though maybe I just want to believe. :D
