Well, I'm officially entering the San Francisco Bay Guardian Fiction Contest ... the only problem is that the word limit is 2000, whilst my baby is (was) 2887 long. I've been shaving it slowly and surely for the last two hours, and I'm down to 2067. Goddamn, this is exhausting. I've printed five copies of "Lay-Z Day-Z", and so far I don't think I've lost track of the general theme of my work. I'm taking a break right now, but 67 words is beginning to look like a serious ordeal. I could get rid of adjectives and adverbs galore, but where would the spice be? I could get rid of lengthy metaphors and similes, but some more flavor would be lost. I like to write with a scent of poetry in my prose, and I don't want to get rid of it. This sucks, like, hardcore. Needless to say, the manuscript is due at the SFBG headquarters on Mississippi by Monday. Wish me luck!
67 words? Wow.
Down to 42 (edit)
did it! (5.35 am)! 2000 words, exactly! now I just have to drive the copies to Mississippi. Yippee!
