Drunken Orgies for Jesus
Today I came across this in my theology textbook:
The major gods of the Canaanites were the Baals and their female partners, the Astartes. Canaanites believed that the Baals controlled the land. The fertility of the land depended on the Baals having sexual relations with their consorts. The Canaanites believed that they should share in rituals of fertility, including ritual prostitution and drunken orgies, to help bring the divine pair together. They believed that by imitating the actions of the gods, they could release the powers that controlled the fertility of land and flocks.
Now, I have two questions:
why didn’t our modern age have lucked out and had sex-loving gods and goddesses, and why did these practices have to die out?
I mean, just think…
- Excuse me ma’am, we just got a call from the neighbors about a disturbance at this residence. We’re going to have to break up this party - wait, what’s going on in there?!
- It’s an orgy! An orgy for the lord!
