It was a brilliantly cold winter night, so clear the stars looked like jewels scattered on the velvety dark. Remus paused on the dock and stared out at the frozen lake. A thin figure skated in lazy circles about a hundred yards out, the green in his House scarf turned black in the starlight.
"I never knew you could skate." Remus checked the bandage stabilizing his left knee, then knelt to lace his skates, one by one. They were old, but still fit through some miracle.
"Blame my grandmother. She wanted a John Curry in the family and paid for lessons until I got my Hogwarts letter." Severus gathered speed, set himself, and managed a shaky double loop. "I stopped when I went to school. It wasn't as if I had a chance of catching Robin Cousins, you know."
"You aren't the only one. Mum thought I looked adorable in tights." Remus stood, wobbled onto the ice, and slowly skated toward the other man. "Dead embarrassing, especially when Peter found a picture of me dressed as a little flower for a local ice show."
Severus snorted. He had been there long enough to trace several school figures on the pristine ice. "I will never cease to marvel at how mothers think stuffing their children into ridiculous costumes has any merit." He glided past Remus, jumped again, and began skating toward a frozen stream that fed into the lake. "Let's see if you remember anything. Tag!"
"Tag? What the - Severus!" Remus tried and failed to keep up with the long, even strokes. "What are you doing?"
Severus whirled in place. His hair blew across his nose and mouth, and he impatiently pushed it behind one ear. "You thought a night on the pond would be romantic. Here's your chance to prove it. Catch me if you can!"
He pivoted and started stroking his way toward a small feeder stream that led into one of the safer parts of the forest. Remus made a face at the evidence that Severus had clearly kept up with his skating. "If my knee goes wonky - "
The reply was lost in the wind. Severus glanced over his shoulder long enough to wave, then followed the stream into the woods and vanished. Remus cursed under his breath as he nearly stumbled on a crack in the ice. This was romantic?
He slowed and cast a vision enhancement charm on his eyes as he glided under the trees. His night vision was almost as poor as a human's under a crescent moon, and of course Severus was in black except for the green and silver in his scarf. He took a deep sniff of the frosty air sweat pine snow scat wool ice winterberries Severus and waited for the spell to take effect.
A tall figure came into view about twenty feet down the stream, just before the stepping stones the students used to ford the water on nature walks. Remus laughed and waved.
"I see you - "
Severus turned and made as if to skate away. Remus gritted his teeth, ignored a slight pop in his knee, and half skated, half ran down the stream. He paused at the stepping stones and nearly fell.
"Is that the best you can do?" Severus turned neatly and began skating backwards, skates glittering as he stroked past twigs and rocks and rough patches on the surface. "You'll never - "
"Guess again!" Remus forced himself not to think about what he was doing. His strides lengthened out in a last desperate lunge, and Severus was in his arms, momentum carrying them toward the banks. Remus could feel his heart pounding through his clothes. "Got you."
Severus grabbed Remus's hands and pulled them tight about his waist. His face was flushed with cold and exertion. "What makes you think I wanted to get away?" he all but purred.
"As if you ever - ah! Watch out - "
Ice gave way to snow gave way to solid ground as they skated off the stream and tumbled into a drift so white and clean it all but glowed. Remus did his best to cradle Severus as they fell, but the taller man still ended up on his back, legs splayed, arms wrapped firmly about Remus's shoulders.
"Are you all right?" Remus half raised himself and brushed snow and hair from Severus's face. "I swear I didn't mean - "
"Silly wolf. I was wondering how long it would take for you to get me on my back." Severus laughed softly and laid a hand on his cheek. He wore the fingerless gloves he used on winter hikes, and his touch was surprisingly warm. "I'm fine."
"Thank goodness." Remus leaned down to taste his lips. "Even if goodness didn't have a bloody thing to do with it."
Severus made a little sound of pleasure at the kiss. One hand shaped itself to Remus's arse and pressed downwards, and Remus shivered at how good it felt. "Does it ever? You're so easy to seduce - "
"You never need to seduce me, love. All you need to do is walk into the room."
"But where's the fun in that?" Another kiss, this one long and deep and intended to arouse. Severus broke free long enough to nip at Remus's earlobe and whisper something so amazingly filthy that Remus groaned and fumbled at the other man's flies. "Yes - oh yes, just like that - yes - "
Remus cast a charm that would keep them from freezing and crushed their cocks together. "Is that what you want? Is it? Or maybe you want this?" He shoved his hand into the snow until his fingers started to numb, then reached under the fine wool jersey and twisted a nipple. Severus yelped and arched up against him, eyes huge and wild, and clawed at his back.
"Oh yes - you love it, don't you? Anything and everything I do to you. That's right, let go, we're alone, it's safe - "
Severus threw his head to one side, neck pale against his hair and clothes. Remus pushed scarf and collar aside and worried at his throat, a growl rising in his chest at the hot scent of musk cutting through the air. A long, strong leg hooked over his thighs, and there was a loud stropping noise as their skate blades clashed and sparked. Remus bite down harder, hard enough to bruise, and began pulling at their cocks before the ache drove him mad.
"Mine - you're mine, you know that? You want it, don't you? Don't you?"
"Yes - yes - teased you - want you - oh God just like that - don't stop don't stop don't stop - "
Severus was thrusting up against him now, teeth bared in ecstasy, and the friction was so good Remus had to thrust back, thrust and buck and bite and kiss until it was too much, more than he could stand, and sudden heat wet his hand. Severus followed a moment later, hips jerking madly, and gasped out something that sounded very much like "love you."
The charm had worn off by the time Remus lifted his head and nuzzled the cool black hair. "Happy birthday, Severus."
"Thank you." Severus cupped his jaw and traced a faint scar on his cheek. "This was exactly what I wanted."
"And to think I have champagne and strawberries waiting at home when all you wanted was a romp in the snow." Remus rolled onto his back and lay still for a moment before refastening his clothes. The trees were thin enough here to see the winter sky. "Teach me to fuss."
"Champagne and strawberries will be marvellous now that I've had the main course." Severus zipped his flies and sat up. Snow had caked on his skate blades and back. "I'm a bit peckish after all that exercise, you know. Shall we?"
"I think so." Remus stood and brushed ice crystals from his legs. "Home or the dock? My guards - "
"So are mine." Severus stepped onto the ice and held out his hands. "I always wanted to try pairs skating, you know."
"Did you?" Remus hugged him for a moment, then took his arm and let Severus guide them back toward the lake. There was an open patch of water near the far end, and he could just make out a tentacle reaching toward the stars. "I'm not much of a skater any more, but with enough practice - "
Severus drew him against his body and glided out onto the circle Hagrid had cleared for the students. He turned to Remus and smiled, just enough that Remus could see it. "It should be worth it."
"It already is," Remus murmured as they headed for the dock and home.
