You know what kills me is that since his battle with Zabuza, Kakashi's performance has been written as weak and showing an inability to get through a battle without being drained. I understand that he has less chakra than Naruto- but who the hell has as much chakra as Naruto does??
This is the fame Copy- Nin we're talking about. He is roughly between 29-32 years old- which is not old by any means. Even for a martial artist. Jiraiya, whom had a good 20 years on Kakashi was able to stand up longer than he has thus far against Pein. It makes no sense to me. That's why I firmly believe Kakashi will make it through this.
What made me say my theory was shot is the fact that Danzou says, "Akatsuki are good for something after all." Yet, I can not totally deny the possibility that I could still be right.
We were lead to believe that Pein was the leader of Akatsuki, until Tobi made his identity known as Uchiha Madara. Pein seems to be the one who is hot and heavy on obtaining all of the tailed beasts; where Madara went as far as to offer one to Sasuke. He seems not to care about the tailed beasts as much as he cares for revenge... or perhaps what he deems as fairly taking the seat of Hokage.
Ever notice how the members of Akatsuki refer to Pein as "leader"? And although Kisame knows that Tobi is Madara, he still goes along with his peers by calling Pein "leader". It was never really said who the real leader of Akatsuki was. From what we know about "Tobi", he started hanging around Zetsu- which is after Akatsuki was already formed; likely by Pein.
Perhaps Pein is no match for Madara and this is why he formed some sort of alliance with Madara. If this is true, it would not necessarily mean their goals are the same. Ulterior motives are usually fair game for just about any literary villain.
Hmm. Well, I used to think that, yes, he was being painted as weak. But now I think it was more an illustration of how Kakashi is cautious to the point of being almost 'overly' in displays of his skills. He is very adept at running away - as shown in chapter 423 when he buries himself in rubble under the guise of a lightning clone. That scene alone made me think immediately of Pakkun. I thought, 'So that's why Pakkun's so good at fleeing!'
I mean, come on. A clone fucking good enough to fool Pain? That's serious fucking skill. And not just one perspective on Pain, but two; neither of Pain's bodies could detect the false Kakashi. Not to mention he actually got through to land a hit on him. I think this is quite an elaborate act of gauging Pain's abilities; information gathering that Kakashi is trying to match up or disprove with their collected intelligence.
Each confrontation Naruto has just goes to further show the seemingly endless pool of chakra he has with such gratuitus use before even beginning to dip into reserves (read: normally Nine Tails). Kakashi has momumental stamina, but quite honestly he's not used to going up against people who are stronger than him; and certainly not by such greivious differences. It's understandable to see how this would wear on him. Up until recently, Kakashi was pretty much at the top of the shinobi food chain; the ultimate ninja to bag and collect bounty on. And this has allowed him to survive thus far. Seriously. Asuma was taken out by lower Akatsuki members. And Kakashi? He was the one to wear out that undead upper level Akatsuki dude so Naruto could catch him with a Rasengan. And he was the only one with enough resolve to snub out the life. I'm sure Yamato would have, but there's no way he would've gotten in Kakashi's way. That man is a lesser clone, so to speak, of the first hokage. He bowing to Kakashi? Says volumes.
And as Kishi just revealed to us, Kakashi was strong enough to take out one Pain and survive the second. Who else in the Konoha ninja community would have lasted as long? Very few others. True he had minor back up with the Akimichi, but I'm sure their usefulness ended with their initial entry allowing for his escape - of which he was waiting on their proximity before openly engaging Pain - and to keep Pain from directing his entire focus on him. Kakashi undoubtedly delivered all the damage. And he was holding back! He's purely on reconnaissance. If he happens to take out any offshoots of Pain in the process, the better for Konoha. He's gauging weaknesses and strengths, forming strategies and gathering information for an organized counterattack. The injuries he took will be justified if their news reaches Tsunade. The risks were acceptable, so he took them. He made a promise to live, and so he shall. He's not gonna throw it away until he knows Konoha is safe; or as safe as it can be.
Danzo saying that...makes me think that he was refering to the distraction Pain was providing. This would allow him to finally put his plan into its end stages of motion. He doesn't want Pain/Akatsuki to complete the ritual of the Tailed Beasts because he cannont adequately predict the advantage in power it would give the group. While Tobi/Danzo doesn't openly contribute to the group - more like Jester observer with a very sharp knife - he constantly steals information, playing it against what he receives from Konoha's intelligence network in order to formulate his moves for maximum success. He's clearly using both sides, and this was never more obvious than in this latest chapter when the ANBU Root operative publicly questioned why they weren't informing the Hokage. Not even his personal vendetta deliverance posse knows what he's doing. That right there is pretty freaking scary. A highly concentrated group of uninformed superior elites? Bad news.
We know why Tobi/Madara/Danzo want the beasts: to be unrivaled. But it is never even hinted at as to what Akatsuki's wish with them is. Madara is planning to snatch it out from under them, or destroy it so no one can challenge him by unifying against him.
And you just tickled my brain with that Kisame comment! It all makes sense! Kisame is a double agent! He's working for Madara/Tobi. Madara became the first Mizukage after the falling out when Konoha picked its first. And Kisame is from the Land of the Mist! His loyalties are to his first Mizukage! Kisame is keeping watch over one portion of Akatsuki while Tobi does the remaining. Damn, gonna be a good final battle. Because not only will Madara claim his 'rightful' throne and subsequently the Land of Fire, but also all the water lands because he is still the Mizukage! If this happens, the Fourth Great Ninja war will be declared and the remaining nations will rally with their Tailed weapons at the helm to overthrow him and restore their tentative peace. But they won't find out until it's too late that the Tails have been removed from the equation.
I now strongly feel that Madara/Tobi considers Pain no real threat. Between he and Kisame, they can take Pain. "Tobi" probably knows the secret behind Pain's power; especially with the way he was ordering him around earlier in the manga by telling him to 'attack'. Tobi's the real fucking leader; Pain's just the figurehead.
That was my first thought when Kisame refers to Madara as "Mizukage, I mean, Madara." Let's face it, the members of Akatsuki not only have a reputation for being shady yet strong shinobi, but why would the strongest of shinobi all defect from their own villages? For appearances, it seems all have committed some crime against their village or government within... or is it staged?
It should at least remain close in thought that perhaps the truth about Itachi is not too far off from the other members as well. They might have found themselves entering this rogue group by order of their village with their supposed crimes as a cover-up. Konohagakure is no different of a village than any other, aside from the fact that we as readers follow the story that comes directly from Konoha.
With the exception of Orochimaru (being he's just an evil, twisted asshole) and Pein, we really don't know what the other members true motives are for joining the group. Orochimaru wanted Itachi's eyes and ran crying like a little bitch when Itachi scared him. Pein wants to create this profitable utopia by controlling the shinobi nations through war. When he obtains this personal goal of his, is he going to want to share his power with the other members (aside from Konan)? So what is supposed to come of these "throw-back" criminal sinobi? Which leads me to another point...
If you have seven (Itachi, Sasori, Deidara, Zetsu, Hidan, Kakuzu and Tobi/Madara) members that are abnormally strong shinobi criminals, why would they take orders and be oh, so obedient for Pein? As readers, we should have questioned why at some point all of the members did not band together and form a mutiny. Seriously- think about a bunch of convict forming a group in jail that one guy calls the shots. If the members of Akatsuki were the criminals they're claimed to be, they would have gotten together on the side and been like, "Who the fuck does this Pein guy think he is? We're taking him out- together." Madara seemingly has no use for collecting and controlling the tailed beasts- Hell, he even offered one to Sasuke to keep as his own... like a pet.
When I start theorizing crap like that, I can't help but think the majority is in Akatsuki for long term reconnaissance purposes. Jiraiya died without there being any revelation of who his Akatsuki spy was. After Itachi's death and the truth being spilled, I wouldn't be shocked if it was Itachi and the whole scene in Part I at the hotel, where Itachi declines to engage in fighting with Jiraiya (and suggests that Kisame does the same) would make perfect sense. After all, the members of Akatsuki are all obligated to obtain their tailed beast... or at least make it look like they're going after it.
I see your point on Kakashi being cautious- thus why he has such a high success level. I think I will have to continue this in a second post.. lol
I can say your perspective of Kaksahi using his fight with Pein as strictly recon is very plausible.
Given Kishi's strong bonds of lineage, it would only make sense and complete "The next generation is stronger than the last." Manipulating strategy properly is a form of strength- it's been consistently shown through Shikamaru; who isn't particularly strong or motivated, but has a high rate of success.
Kakashi is an indirect student of Jiraiya's, whom lost to Pein. Jiraiya taught Minato, who taught Kakashi and both Jiraiya and Kakashi taught Naruto; Minato's son. (Which points to Naruto to becoming the epitome of strength in this 4 generation lineage) With that said, Kakashi should have a better level of success against Pein (he should be able to walk away alive), with Naruto ultimately finishing him. Kishi has remained loyal to this sequence as much as he has remained loyal to the San-nin teaching the next "Once in a generation" group, Team 7.
I question the final outcome of the "Once a generation" team thing, though. This would be the second time Kakashi has been involved in said team and look what happened to his first one. I can see them going down the same route, but I can also see the same thing happening to this as did to his previous.
I would like to see this end favorably where he can finally relax after having satisfactorily lived his life in Obito's place and be happy, but I have no clue as to which way he's planning to take this; not definately, any way.
...Yet.
Back to that Seven thing. Hmm. That number pops up quite a bit at significant times. Team 7, the newest prodigal team? Kisame, one of the 7 Swords? 7 core members of Akatsuki?
Verrrr~~~~rrrrrry interesting. I wonder what the correlation is.
IDK... Kishi strikes me as a sucker for history repeating itself, bonds and the whole full circle concept.
Interestingly enough, the number 7 in numerology, when referring to ones life path is deemed the "Life Path of the Loner". Those who live under a 7 must have a strong sense of who they are and be at peace with themselves in order to complete a life of searching and seeking out truth.
I've always been enthralled with Kishi's cryptic ways. He has a way of making his audience second guess and hardly ever predict any outcomes. Truly, he is a fabulous author.
Hmm. Re-reading this theorizing made me focus more on the Danzo-brother-of-Tobi/Madara thing.
It has merit. I do believe that hairstyles account for much in manga; especially ones in which such great detail is put into everything, as Kishi has done. The hair of Danzo makes me think that it is his younger brother from whom eyes were stolen. But that leaves us with the problem of taking 'two' eyes. Was it only figurative; the dual being normal sight paired with Sharingan? Or did he indeed take both physical organs?
But then I started thinking further on it. What if Danzo relinquished his eyes, but traded it for one of Madara's blinded ones - or nearly blind. It seems to me that Danzo is always squinting when he even bothers to open the eye. Perhaps he aids his brother from behind the scenes in Konoha while Madara sees to his work outside its borders. Danzo would take a barely functional eye sacrificing all for his brother. If there's one theme that seems to remain constant throughout the series, it's camaraderie. And even with the unrest that had lain within the Uchiha clan alone, brothers seemed to have an unbreakable bond.
Quite significant, I think, for events in the near future.
The Danzou/ Madara brother connection really peaks my interest as well. I just can not bring myself to base it solely on the hairstyle. Or what I should say is, the hairstyle similarities are the weakest fact that can be argued to prove the theory. However, if you wish to throw it in as evidence- let's do so. My denouncement of that comparison was completely dismissed being I felt it would be difficult for others to deem as believable. being you're fine with it, it works for me.
Let's post a few images for easy reference...
Izuna to left and Madara to the right.
Danzou to the left and Madara to the right.
Physical Attributes:
- Danzou keeps his right eye covered, Madara's right eye is all we have seen.
- Madara has puffy bags under his eyes as a child and adult. Madara's brother has smoother skin under his eyes. Danzou has rings of old age under his eyes.
- Madara's brother has a squarer jaw than his brother. Danzou has a very squared jaw line.
- Hairstyle similarities.
Considerable Factors:
- Both Madara and Danzou dislike the Shodaime. Danzou claimed he never cared for 1st beliefs and teaching. He's the leader of ROOT which is a strict militant division of ANBU. The Uchiha Clan lead the "police" department within Konoha. Madara helped establish this when the village was formed. Danzou never cared for Sandaime either, yet he is one the few that know Itachi was ordered to murder the entire clan, although it was mentioned Itachi was an ANBU captain and never stated he was in ROOT.
- What could be easier than having a person strategically placed on the inside while calling the shots from the outside.
- Like my theory on the members of Akatsuki, wouldn't it be smart to have intelligence on the inside of what is deemed to be a dangerous group? Madara doesn't even care about Akatsuki's goals- he offered one of the tailed beasts to Sasuke. The statue would require all nine tailed beasts to be functional and here's Madara giving one away.
- Danzou made certain that Naruto would not be called back to the village. He has always segregated himself within ROOT and looked down upon the rest of Konoha. Why would he care if Akatsuki obtained the nine tails?
Anyway you look at it, it all points back to Danzou and Madara being linked somehow. Whether they are same person, brothers or just partners, they are definitely working together.
Just wanted to add this little tidbit of information for your analyzing enjoyment...
The meanings for all three names, translated to English goes as follows:
Madara: Translates to spots, speckles or mottles. Refers to the tomoe of the Sharingan???
Danzou: The spelling could be off, but when looked up minus the "u", it becomes the Japanese word "Danzoku"; which translates to "intermittent". As we know, the definition for intermittent would be "starting and stopping at intervals". Could hold means for either theory- Madara/ Danzou or Danzou/Izuna.
Izuna: Could be spelled as "Iizuna", which translates to "Least weasel". Go figure what the Hell that might mean. I mean, are the Uchiha that obsessed with weasels and if so; why???
I think that reveals a lot. Looking at Danzou/Madara, their common them is intermittent. Spots - short bursts - of personalities shoot through. Danzou has his manic periods where he spazzes and kills someone - latest victim a toad summon - or becomes suddenly ruthless in his passive-agressiveness. Madara has these flashes of insight where he suddenly 'switches' sides, appealing to the more promising half with truths that could be lies - but who is to know better; lacking evidence to either prove or disprove - in order to steer those of interest down paths he's laying for them. I also think the meaning for this particular name could imply that he's not necessarily all there. Fragments of his personality(ies) showing through or just the true one.
And Izuna, I think, is perhaps meant to say 'lesser weasel'; as in maybe a distant cousin of the weasel family. Those animals are known to be highly intelligent, very clever and resourceful, and have a penchant for turning vicious on short notice. Perhaps by 'lesser' in this case, it means that Izuna possesses the Uchiha (Madara) characteristics/mannnerisms to a much lesser degree; not as likely to act out as Madara or perhaps rarely to the same severity. (And hints that one is likely to turn against those who he swore fealty to. I'm picturing Danzou more, but Madara is still applicable to this reasoning; however more unlikely given his past performance.) I dare say that these related meanings of names is meant to hint that Danzou and Izuna are in fact the same person. Or they were at one time before loving Izuna became imbittered by life and the sacrifices he'd made. Izuna was then, Danzou now; although both still share the same damning love for their brother that they just can't break free of.
This is the fame Copy- Nin we're talking about. He is roughly between 29-32 years old- which is not old by any means. Even for a martial artist.
