What Do You Have To Say? - A Winter Memory

Dec 12, 2007 20:43

They say you can smell the snow before it even begins to fall. I remember the blizzard of 78' here on Long island. I was 4 years old at the time and it was the most snow I have seen in my life, to this day. The sound of plows clearing the road went on throughout the night, although their effort was fruitless. I remember how silent the world seemed when I finally awoke to over two feet of fresh snow.

No one in their right mind was out- aside from my father. It was a habit of his- clearing the driveway so everyone could pass safely. I begged my mother to go out and with much whining, she had dressed me in this pink down coat that was ever so soft and sent me on my way.

My father had finished shoveling and had already gotten my sled out. It was pointless though. As soon as he placed me on the sled, I would sink down low enough that I could not go anywhere.

After several tries and likely the onset of frostbite, we went inside to enjoy a cup of homemade hot chocolate and watch as another six inches of snow fell.
