Good Morning! And it is a good morning. Yesterday it was over one-hundred degrees here in La La Land. Even the beaches were a sweltering ninety degrees.
I'm not sure how I feel about hot weather. I don't deal with it very often. It rarely gets above eighty degrees here. I know my system isn't too keen on humidity, but blaring heat seems tolerable. When I was in Tuscon last May the thermometer climbed into the upper nineties and I didn't seem to mind too much. I gooped on the tear-free sunblock (Bless Banana Boat for making the stuff) and went about my merry way. As long as my skin wasn't crisping and I had air conditioned places to hang out in during the very hottest part of the day I really enjoyed Tuscon. I was reminded of the song from Rent about Santa Fe. The desert is a very interesting place. I liked Tuscon enough to gently consider the University of Arizona. I found the place clear and peaceful, and the people were extremely cheerful. I have a feeling the hot weather has something to do with some of the elements in Tuscon I appreciated.
These days my body doesn't seem to cherish extremes. When the temperature varies dramatically it seems to cause some internal grumblings, and I have to pace myself very, very carefully, but I should be doing that anyway, so no big deal. Yesterday was extremely useful. I got up early, meditated, then started to tackle housework. Now that my computer is functional again I have tunes which helps so very much. Any task is superable as long as there is music to groove to (or so I keep telling myself). After a few hours of that it was getting a bit too hot to function. So I packed up my backpack and went to the college to soak up conditioned air in the computer lab; no reason to sit in a hot house and stew. I spent two very pleasant hours on this week's project. The rest of the evening I spent doing quiet activities and practicing the guitar. The bossa nova I'm working on seemed to go well with the hot evening.
It felt good to continue to function optimally in less than ideal circumstances. I did get a little woozy when I stopped to pump gas on the way to the lab. The thermometer in the car read 108. I'm not sure anyone feels perky in that sort of heat, and the petroleum fumes probably didn't help. But I got back into my very well air-conditioned car and drove to the very cool and shady lab where the only glare was from the computer screens. And after lab, when the temperature had lowered into double digits, I had a big coke crammed with ice. I don't want to consider how other people got stuck spending yesterday because it was brutal. I think I will just fixate on how lucky I am to have so many options available to me to avoid being miserable. Yesterday I appreciated every single one of them.
