I like listening to NPR, I especially appreciate the news-content on holidays. I try to read/listen to the news, but usually I just can't stomach hearing about how many people were killed in a random act of violence. It makes me very sad, and has nothing to do with my life. I also don't really enjoy hearing about the latest indiscretion by some notorious individual who seems to have gained infamy by having a phenomenal lack of common sense. But I do like hearing about someone like Naysan McIlhargey (and I love his name!). It's not an exciting news story, but I sure like the idea of doing something that is so engaging and dependent on community. I'm always fascinated by people who find ways to use their time to create. If you like pottery, you might like this story.
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=120844949 I was especially intrigued by the volunteers thinking of the fire in the kiln as a living entity. Feeding, coaxing and grooming the fire from two-hundred to two-thousand degrees caught my imagination. Good stuff. It makes my hands itch to be crafty. Right now that sort of thing isn't on my to do list, but I like hearing about it.
