Passing, Phones and Deer

I passed my RICA!!! Joy and Elation!

While I've been a faithful fan of Verizon Wireless, it seems that they have no coverage on Kodiak Island in Alaska where I'll be fishing in Larsen Bay.  Sad times.  So, I'll have no phone service over the next month.  Adventures!  I'm super excited to be going.  I won't work the whole month in the cannery since I still have homework pending and that comes first.  But I'm not giving up on the experience.

I've been sleeping "outside" for the past week in a covered patio during Port Townsend's fluctuating weather.  Sunny one day, rain the next, and 20 mile winds in-between.  Last night, a particularly strong gale passed through.  The rooster crowed all night, which picked up his piercing cries and whipped them around the patio in an eerie way.  I woke up around 1am to the most awful sound of something crying out for help right outside the canvas wall.  It sounded like one of Newt's llamas, which would have been unlikely since they're behind fences very far away.  It's cries were strained and paniced as the wind brushed them quickly past my ears.  Scared, I woke up Newt.  By the time I wrenched him from his deep slumber, the wind had carried the cries far from earshot, so he heard nothing.  Eventually, I fell back asleep.

In the morning, Newt's mother discovered a young deer in the lake, dead.  The coyotes must have attacked it in the night.  I know it's all part of nature, but I've grown a soft spot for the gentile creatures I've watched over the week grazing on our lawn.  I almost got out of bed to investigate the matter last night, but I realize now there is and never was anything I could have done except place myself in danger.  I suppose Mother Nature has a much stronger stomach then I.

Here's to discovering what wildlife is like outside the city!  Absolutely fascinating.
