i got your crazy! (recs)
So last week I got very excited about Britney's new video (omg, have you all seen this awesomeness?? For background: same guy who directed Toxic...AND ADIDAS. And Ayo Technology. I think it's clear what Joseph Kahn likes.) and I asked for recs. And now I have made a list! And we can pretend it's Monday, and here are some recs!
+Outside by Kaelie // In which Britney figures shit out, and it's kind of sad because she really didn't know that her relationship wasn't genuine to begin with. I think this is what's really interesting about Britney fic, because it sort of imposes a hard reality on the situation of slash as concept--that these guys do have girlfriends and those girlfriends are people and what happens when they realize that everything they thought was a lie?
+It's a Funny Thing, This Thing Called Love by ephemeral_blue // brighton_girl recced this to me because of the way Justin describes Britney in this, and she was so spot on in what I like it's pretty amazing, because that is exactly what I love about this story. The Britney-as-seen-by-Justin bit is perfect and contradictory and exactly the way Justin would see her.
+Scenes from A Real World by bitterchick // Not online anymore, but if anyone wants it, I have it and it's pass around-able. It's amazing. Actually, this series (it's a 3-part) is one of my favorite fics of all time. The Britney in it is so amazing and believable and exactly how I wish things had gone for her in the end. And the Justin POV is brilliant. I love everything about that fic and seriously, if you haven't read it, just let me know and I will send it to you because YES.
+ Straight Out from Underneath: the So Put Me Down, Punk mix by me // llamabitchyo said I had to rec myself, so here you go. I really like this fic. I really like this Britney. And she surprised me a lot in the writing of it, the way she does in real life! So if you want to read about messy Lance/Britney/Justin triangles... this is the fic for you.
+ Girl Stuff by llamabitchyo // Oh man, this fic! Her Britney voice is amazing and so incredibly perfect. Child-like in that way Britney has about her. And also? This fic made me want to read more Justin/Britney. Who knew that Justin/Britney could be so amazing and nuanced??
+Not As Smart As You Require by Synecdochic // Now, Synecdochic wrote what I think is hands-down one of the best things I've ever read, period, Freedom Is Just Another Word for Nothing Left to Lose, which you probably haven't read if you are not an SGA fan, but is amazing and everyone should read it regardless because it's not really about SGA in any way. BUT YES. My point being, she (he? she, I think) is an amazing amazing writer, and this fic is also amazing. Britney is insecure about her intelligence, and I love this idea of her trying to work it out and realizing there's only so far she can push herself.
+Ink by Christi // Recced by linear_flower, and I like it, but I don't know if I like it for the reasons other people do. I like how it shows Britney's willingness to be manipulated and to have her mind changed and to be told what she wants and what she likes. It's fucked up and I'm not sure it's supposed to be fucked up. Accidental truth is always more interesting.
+Four Letter Words by ...I can't figure out who the author is! // inahurricane recced this. I haven't read it yet because OMG it's long! But it's Britney/Nick so you KNOW I'm going to read it. YAY!
+Stop and Smell the Smoke by throughadoor // Justin/Britney amazingness. Britney smokes, and she knows she shouldn't, and Justin's observations of her are just so fucking perfect.
+But I Can't Make You Love Me by Hayley // Oh, this fic. SO GOOD. So well-written. I love the Britney voice, and this part:
Justin was the first person to call you pretty that mattered. The only one, really. He was twelve and you were eleven and he was wearing a bandana and a checked shirt and he'd giggled and run away after he said it, but not in an embarrassed way. He wasn't awkward or shy and he made it sound like an observation everyone should make, like you were a pretty picture to be appreciated. Nevertheless, it made you feel special.
He kissed you. A few times. When you were younger. His mouth was warm but he didn't use his tongue much and he had this annoying habit of not tilting his head at all to avoid the bumping of noses which meant your head was twisted way to the side. It hurt your neck and was absolutely perfect.
YESYESYES.
+Caught Me Lingering by jchalo // BritC!!! After JOSHLYNN, BritC is the closest I come to an OTP. Like, a ridiculous, never-gonna-happy, but OMG I WANT IT TO HAPPEN OTP. They would be so amazingly fucked up together. And this story is about that. Also, lots of graphic het, so if het is not your thing, don't read this.
+Fly I Fall and the rest of hurricanmegan's BritC series, which I adore and want more of. Her Britney is so complicated and her JC is so dark and I lovelovelove it.
+The Haircuts by paintedmaypole // Because the Britney in this is so delightfully bitchy and a bit pretensious and a lot wonderful, and I really really heart her.
+Shiny Shiny Pants and Bleached Blond Hair by Sandy and Katie // In which the guy from Wilco writes Britney/Lance fanfic. And it sounds stupid, but this being popslash, it is of course amazing instead. I know Sandy wrote some other Britney fic, and some het fic, and I wish it was still around. SIGH. Why do people take their fic off the internet where I can't get to it??
Anyway, that's a lot of Britney to be getting on with. YAY!
