As mentioned by
ciara_belle, a list of
"1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die" and yes this list does exist as an actual book itself. OF course the list is based on some individuals' opinions only, there are some very good choices but in turn, having read the list I now have to share MY very important opinions on it
* Good call on Lanark by Alasdair Gray, A Confederacy Of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole, and The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark
* Not good call on Under The Net by Iris Murdoch, it's okay but certainly missable compared to others by her. Also The Information by Martin Amis, which is basically an amusing but unnecessary book about how Julian Barnes annoys him.
* Really bad call on Dead Babies by Martin Amis. It's totally unredeemable AND gross. I mean he almost always makes some sort of moral point in his novels, but not in this.1
* for Alan Hollinghurst it's kind of funny that they choose The Folding Star over The Line Of Beauty
* Mark Twain aside, they don't really go for children's literature? They're probably missing out a LOT of good picks
* oh I have more nitpicks but blah de blah since I haven't read 918 of those books

1 May I have a footnote?2 Yes I may. I was thinking about Martin Amis recently. I read all his books up till his autobiography came out (it was pretty good), but I started Yellow Dog and it kind of sucked so I didn't bother continuing and my interest fell away.
I still count Money as one of my favourites though, and there's supposedly a miniseries being made of it. ALSO Night Train that usually gets dissed but I really liked, is being made into a
movie starring Sigourney Weaver w00t
Amis almost always includes a character named Keith or Terry (both, in Money) and they're always this working-class slobby evil type that Amis is obviously obsessed with
[Edit: the most recent PEye took the piss out of him for this hahaha]
I heard on the radio that in the States, among the most shoplifted authors are William Burroughs, Jack Kerouac, and Martin Amis.
