That morning Changmin was woken up by a familiar weight settling over his legs. He shifted but refused to open his eyes, still clinging to the hazy images of his fading dream.

“Wake up, Baby-Min,” a soft voice cooed next to his ear.

Changmin turned his head away from the noise. Five more minutes, he pleaded mentally. Just five more minutes and he would open his eyes.

“Okay then,” he heard, and that was the only warning he got before something wet and warm was shoved into his ear, the repulsive feel making him open his eyes instantly with a shriek and a struggle to get away.

“That’s disgusting, hyung!” he yelled, trying to wipe his ear clean of saliva while at the same time trying to dislodge his legs from under his brother.

Jaejoong laughed above him. “You don’t exactly taste like crème brûlée yourself. Do you even wash your ears?”

“Yah!” Changmin exclaimed, bucking up without any real strength. He was still sleepy after all and with a half-hearted huff he gave up.

“What’s the occasion anyway? It’s usually the other way around, with me trying to get your unresponsive body out of bed,” Changmin mumbled, wiping his ear with the corner of his blanket.

“Special dates call for special treatment,” Hyung said in a singsong voice.

Changmin stared up at him, confused.

Jaejoong rolled his eyes. “With those grades one would think you are smarter. Happy birthday, you old pabo.”

“You’re older,” Changmin said with a scoff.

“And more handsome,” he countered.

Changmin muttered something under his breath that sounded pretty similar to “conceited idiot”.

It was true though. Jaejoong-hyung was really handsome at sixteen; with pale skin, big eyes and glossy black hair that fell long over his forehead and ears. Eomma hated it, and Appa said he looked like a bum but Changmin-and the entire female population at their school for that matter-thought it suited his brother.

It was unfair that he got the unlucky genes: large ears and long, lanky limbs that would not fill out no matter how much he ate. His eyes looked mismatched when he smiled and his hair refused to cooperate most mornings but his Eomma said he was handsome as well. Changmin would roll his eyes as soon as his Eomma was not watching him anymore. Everyone knew that if your mother was the only one that said it, it did not count.

He must’ve been staring because Jae-hyung flicked his nose. “You’re falling asleep on me again.”

“Well then get off so I can get ready!”

“But I have a secret to tell you!” Hyung exclaimed, mischief dancing in his dark eyes.

Changmin’s eyebrows lifted in interest.

Jaejoong leaned over him, lips hovering over his ear again.

“Appa bought you a bicycle,” he whispered, pleased to be the bearer of good news.

“Seriously?!” Changmin exclaimed in excitement before squirming out from under his Hyung and running down the stairs, still in his pajamas.

Jaejoong shook his head and smiled, getting up to follow his brother.

The wind whipped at his face as he sped up, his feet pressing hard against the pedals; his legs finding a fast rhythm. He could not believe his father had finally given him a bicycle.

It was brand new, with a red frame and a leather seat. Its brass bell gleamed under the faded winter light and Changmin knew it would look just beautiful when spring came around.

Hyung rode ahead of him, having already memorized every bump in the road and every obstacle to go around. He had gotten his own bicycle-a royal blue model with a lighter-colored leather seat-on his birthday the month before. Even so, after years of walking to school he would have memorized everything anyway.

Jaejoong-hyung had fought tooth and nail for the privilege of walking to school and not having his friends think he was a rich, sheltered brat, but Changmin was not like his Hyung at all. He avoided most conflicts, opting to just go along with anything. That’s why, after Changmin got lost seven years ago, Appa forbade him from going to school with his Hyung.

That day, however, Changmin would not be having any of that.

“What’s the use of having one of these if I can’t go to school on it?” he asked, pointing to his new bicycle. “Please, Appa!”

His father sighed. “I guess you’re old enough now…”

“Yes!” Changmin had exclaimed in triumph, hopping onto his bicycle.

“Jaejoong will take you,” Appa continued.

This time Jaejoong did not protest.

While Jaejoong followed their father’s command to take his little brother to school, Changmin knew how their arrangement worked. When they were a mere block away from the school Changmin slowed down, letting his Hyung ride ahead, further elongating the distance between them.

“One…two…three,” he counted under his breath, watching his Hyung get farther and farther away.

Hyung looked back at him just before he finished counting, shooting him a confused look. Changmin urged him forward with his hand, gesturing he would follow later. Understanding washed over Jaejoong’s face before he nodded, thankful, and kept on pedaling.

With his looks and charm Hyung had quickly entered the popular crowd. Changmin had no such luck. His above-average intelligence was shunned by his classmates the second he got the highest score in his first Math exam.

It did not matter that they were brothers or that they actually liked spending time with each other when they were at home. In school, ignoring each other’s existence had become a routine that a new bicycle was not going to break any time soon.

Spring announced itself with a sudden heat wave that had every person in Seoul storing their coats away and stocking their closets with clothes more appropriate for warmer weather.

When Changmin and Jaejoong arrived home their uniform shirts had stuck to their backs after pedaling under the hot sun all the way from school.

“Why is this place so hot?” Hyung whined as soon as they stepped into the house. They were mostly alone, with half of the maids running errands and Cook staying in the kitchen.

“It’s only the lower floor,” Changmin muttered, but he was just as annoyed as his Hyung over the heat.

They found refuge in Jaejoong’s room after deeming it the coolest in the house. Changmin laid on the floor next to the window, letting the breeze dry the sweat beads sliding down his forehead.

They had brought some fruit up with them. Jaejoong was propped against his bed, busy peeling peaches and apples while Changmin demanded a slice every once in a while.

“You should be helping me, you spoiled brat,” Jaejoong told him, after feeding him a peach slice.

“I’m really bad at peeling,” Changmin offered cheekily, opening his mouth once he was finished in order to get another piece.

“At least entertain me or something,” his Hyung huffed, eating the last slice of peach and grabbing an apple to peel this time.

Changmin hummed, deep in thought. What would be a good topic to talk about? He looked at his Hyung, trying to come up with something. Jaejoong-hyung paid him no mind; too busy keeping the knife close to the peel to avoid wasting precious apple flesh, his pink tongue peeking out of his mouth to wet his lips.

“Have you kissed anyone yet, Hyung?” Changmin blurted out, ears reddening when he realized how juvenile he sounded.

“Yes,” his Hyung answered without any hesitation. “Have you?”

Changmin’s blush deepened and he shook his head.

Jaejoong cooed at him. “Baby-Min still thinks girls have cooties!”

“I’m already thirteen, Hyung,” Changmin claimed indignantly.

“And untouched, what a shame,” he teased further.

Changmin stole the apple wedge from his Hyung’s fingers as a small revenge. How dare he laugh at him when he knew Changmin had no chance whatsoever with the girls at school?

“Wanna try it?” he heard his Hyung say.

“Huh?” Changmin looked at him, confused. “With you?”

“We are brothers, it wouldn’t count,” Jae-hyung told him.

Changmin did not say yes, but did not say no either and somehow that was all the encouragement his Hyung needed for he had suddenly scooted closer to Changmin, the fruit bowl forgotten behind him.

“Come on, sit up,” he demanded, already pulling at Changmin’s shoulders.

Changmin complied, tensing a little when his Hyung leaned forward.

“Stay still,” he said against his lips, holding his face in place with the soft press of his palms.

Changmin was about to back out, tell Jaejoong to forget about the whole thing, when his Hyung ran his tongue over his lips again, completely distracting his brain into blankness.

And then he felt them being pressed against his own, a light pressure meant to coax. Changmin found himself responding to the kiss, moving his own against his brother’s. He caught the faint taste of peaches and apples but before he could savor more of it the pressure was lifted and the hands on his face were suddenly gone.

He had not realized he had closed his eyes.

“There you go,” Jae-hyung said with a smile, before returning to his previous spot and to his peeling.

Changmin liked his lips.

“It doesn’t count, right?” he asked.

“Nope,” Hyung answered before handing him another apple wedge.

Changmin took the offered fruit, still not feeling very reassured.
