I'd like to bring up two corollary points in regards to "walking in another's shoes"
1) There are some shoes you can never wear. One major example of this is race. A person who is race "A" cannot truly know what it is like to be race "B" -- note I didn't use black/white because that works both ways and for all kinds of ethnicities. You can develop a degree of empathy and understanding, but will never have the formative life experiences that result from waking up every morning as (fill in blank).
2) Some, you could wear, but you really will never grok it until they are truly on your feet. It's part of why I don't go on too much about being a military veteran or cancer survivor, and understand that any time I talk/write about being from a very small Southern town, odds are the other party is going to have a limited idea of what that's like. This kinda relates to your break-in experience. That kind of violation is hard (maybe impossible) to fully understand unless one has experienced it.
