electric sunshine

The trancelike state I was in was so enveloping I missed the fact that Jim was still talking.
“Are you listening?”
“What…yes…what did you say?”
“I said Triple A.”
“Triple A?”
“Yeah, you hayseeds do have Triple A, even out here in Old McDonald land don’t you?”
“You have a Triple A membership? Did you get that from passing the Electric Sunshine Test?”
“Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, you dork. And my mother has Triple A on all the cars. All we need to do is find a phone.
Somewhat relieved but still a bit taken aback, I answered, “Well yes…we…well sure we have Triple A here, but we need to get to a phone. If we could tape up that hose a little bit I guess we have enough water here to get to the next exit or so. But we don’t have any… wait a minute I saw something under the front seat.”
“Under the front seat? What are you Nee the FBI?”
“I was looking for a flashlight. I saw this thing with electrical tape on it.”
I moved to the opened driver’s door as I spoke.
“What the heck is this thing for anyway?”
He answered matter-of-factly, “Self defense.”
“O…K…, well let’s see if it will defend us against another boil over.”
I knelt beside the seat and retrieved the homemade blackjack.
“You’re cute Nee, now hurry up these mosquitoes are eating me alive.”

Jim held the flashlight as I used one of the old rags from his trunk to wipe off the hose as best I could. I then wrapped several layers of the tape around the wounded area. The makeshift weapon was fairly new so the adhesive was still in pretty good shape. I had Jim start the engine while I poured the contents of the milk jugs into the radiator. It drank up the whole two gallons and asked for more. I replaced the cap but didn’t tighten it down. Next I tossed the jugs and towel in the trunk, slammed the lid and hopped into the passenger seat. Jim glanced over at me and I spoke,
“I left the cap on loose so she won’t build up any pressure but we better take it nice and easy.”
“Right.”
He floored the gas peddle and the tires spun for a moment then we were catapulted back onto the highway.
“You take it nice and easy, my clock is ticking.”
