How to successfully file for disability, according to other cases I've seen:
1: Call and talk to the folks at disability. Find out what they need and get all of it together. File the first application yourself. You will almost for sure be denied, but you might not.
2: If you're denied the first time, and you probably will be, because that's just how they do things, you need to find a lawyer that will take the fees for legal services on contingency. Meaning, they are motivated to get you your disability because if they don't, they don't get paid.
3: Prepare mentally for a period of financial strain. The typical time is 18mos from initial filing to reciept of benefits, though you should have enough on file with your doctor that I'm sure that you should be able to get expidited processing, which could make it just a couple of months instead.
Talk to your doctors. Get all your files gathered together in one place, too, and have your doctors write up statements that clearly say "This woman is disabled and should be approved yesterday!" Those letters do help.
Don't despair. Talk to those who will be processing your case. Let them know that you've tried to remain independant, and that you simply can't do it anymore. That working full time is detrimental to your well-being, despite your great desire to do so.
I know a few, actually. Online and off. Mom, of course, plus a few of my friends. K's got MS, Kathy's husband's got a brain injury that mimics bipolar (and is treated almost the same), and B has severe ADHD plus another mental disorder.

So you've known folks who've gotten disability? I don't, except for the fellow who babysat the laumdramat I used to go to in my Philly days.
