I like
Swami J's translation of Adi Shankara's Nirvanashatakam. This may be because he's a friend of a dear friend, but so it goes. I used to know the Nirvanashatakam by heart. I still remember the tune it was set to as I learned it.
I like my new bookshelf with secretary, which is downstairs waiting for more people to be around for getting it up the stairs. I swear I'm getting a block & tackle.
I like that 2010 is the year I
declared war on self-deprecation. As I told
thegreenyear shortly before that, if I have to stop talking shit to myself, I'm taking y'all down with me.
I like the book of New England curse folklore I have: one, I found a Weird Place in Maine that
yuki_onna didn't know about yet, and two, the white male folklorist, after handling matters well all through the book, actually notes that he realized in the moment it was not appropriate to ask the Abenaki caretaker of a medicine spring that was the subject of a curse in the early twentieth century (due to what else but greedy-ass white people) about his people's version of the curse story. And didn't. And didn't go run off later and find someone else to pry it out of. I wanted to hug him a little for spelling this out, especially after the Treasury of Southern Folklore I'm only still going through to note things I'd like to dig up other people's versions of.
I like having a list of all the books I have not read, but I'm not particularly invested in sharing it with LJ unless anyone is just gagging to know.
I like my new planner, which I got at the coffee shop I like near my house. It's put out by some anarchist paper, has a boatload of useful features and excellent design. It lists great moments in the history of the labor movement along with the holidays. If you're looking for a planner, I'll find out if it's available online, but it's Saturday and I'm too lazy.
I like that today when we went to pick up the new bookshelf, Miss Mary at the antique jeweler's next door managed to find
una_con_laluna's Perfect Wedding Jewelry. For me, I found a Medusa ring I'm eying but not committed to. We'll see.
I like that it looks like
hps_sterling is back on for
wiscon, that
alexandraerin is going to make it this year, and that May is reasonably soon.
I like that the Alice Walker I got for fifty cents at McKay's (In Times of Love & Trouble) has a long inscription in the front from the giver to the giftee, including which of the stories she liked best. I tend to agree with her. I hope the giftee got a good Christmas out of it, some year before now: it was a nice post-Christmas surprise for me.
I like books in general with long inscriptions in them; it's one of the reasons I patronize used bookstores, because I also sometimes write long inscriptions when I give a book for a purpose or out of a particular love to a particular person. I love books that other people have loved too.
I like
karnythia's new serial about
the harpy. I like where the current arc at
Tales of MU is going.
I like the idea of going to meeting tomorrow morning and I just might, before I go to the flea to see
thegreenyear.
I like the pleasing fullness of my box of stuff to take to McKay's, because books acquired on trade credit don't count against the budget. I like that I'm making notes in my planner like "winnow the nonfiction" (which is frankly out of control.)
I like the cheeseburgers at the snack bar inside the flea where I got my bookshelf. I like that I have a piece of their butter cake for breakfast, if I do decide to go to meeting.
I like the good plans I've been helping make for PUF and other events. I like The Word for the World is Forest, which I'm going to read more once I get some work done.
I like the GBMOJO Christmas album and the limited edition sticker the girls sent along with it. I like the Moleskine I got for free off a book dealer in the UK's Twitter promotion, even if owning one does make me feel a little like Strong Sad. I love that ever since
alexandraerin pulled the "Please come down from your crystal fortress, Pope Lizbet" thing on me, I cannot stop watching
this. Mmm. French fries.
I like all the shawly goodness going on in my world at the moment. I like the fact that a kitten has just curled herself very carefully around a stack of detective novels so as not to disturb them and now appears to be hoarding them very much like a dragon. I like hanging around
statements better than
sf_drama.
First one to make a boom-de-yada joke gets an experimental vegan pie in the face.
