I do and I do know and AFSB, I love you for also being one of the good people. <3
(I was also hoping to wheedle you into possibly donating a fabulous woodburning...or into making me another one, if I auction off the one I own. Or some cheesecake brownies of crack.)
What sort of business does he have? Is it something that people could patronize to help as well? I'm thinking if he owns a store, people could buy stuff, or if he provides a service, people could make appointments and such.
Unfortunately, not really through the medium of the Internet; he runs a specialized courier between the major city and the mid-size cities that surround it.
In sending this information out specifically to my home community, I'm more comfortable identifying Dave by his full name and business...but really, the vast majority of people who use his services are corporate clients that have expense budgets to run important documents and suchlike to [mid size city thirty-five miles away]. However, I'll update the post to let people know why I'm not sending people to buy widgets from Dave. :D
Item interest postings now. I want to have this auction go by the end of the week, but I have to coordinate with hnmic because OMG LAW SCHOOL. I'm probably going to do a thirty day period for managing the community because OMG LAW SCHOOL. But i have backup.
Awww My new rollers aren't here yet and won't be until the end of the month. I'd offer up some custom letterpress business cards for auction or something.
Baking is awesome and sauce, and I thank you from the depths of my heart.
If you haven't ever done an auction before, go check out the archive at con_or_bust: you can see how people have done their baked goods auctions before by checking the tags, and I'll shout you out by the end of the week that the auction is open, I just have to coordinate with Evan (hnmic) who is my local co-conspirator in this enterprise of awesome.
Come the 25th october, I'll make a donation. It's nothing big - but as you said, seven hundred people donating 10 dollars would make that difference. I hope then auction goes well, I hope more donate, and I hope with all my heart that Dave will be able to keep his house.
Oh, darlin', thank you. I have nothing but faith in this Internet; we saved s00j, we saved yuki_onna, we saved the accessiblehouse...and all of those were larger undertakings than this.
We recently won a battle over here (I'm in Sweden) to keep our special place, a café, after-school hang out for everyone who wanted it. For concerts, for creativity, for music. A living-room where everyone's welcome. I'm so happy it didn't get shut down (the old house is going to be demolished, but they have been granted money for a new location, which there is plenty) I can't even tell you.
Everyone needs that special place, that sacred place. The goal does not seem impossible neither, and like you I have big faith in the wheels of the internet. Hope all goes well.
And thank you and everyone involved for doing this. It restores faith in humankind.

Signal boosted - and depending on cash flow when the auction starts, I'll try and donate!
