Things that are Pissing Me Off (or, RaceFail, Day 107):
There are communities that exist solely to better people's fanfic (and original fiction) in the area of its British-correctness. Apparently the RPS fandom needs one to correct racism and ill-informed lame-ass cultural appropriation in fic, too. (Note: the "racism" link goes to color_blue's post about the events, as the originating comm is locked.)
Seriously, y'all? Really? Stop making deepad take her precious time to school you and school yourself. Please. Because POC would like to be able to enjoy their fic without a side of grungy racist nastiness. It's really not an unreasonable request. If there's room for a xxx-person commentfest about icing, there's room for a little fucking sense about writing characters of color in a way that doesn't make people of color want to retch.
It's called being a better writer, y'all.

The Gutenberg Project. I'm planning on exploring Gutenberg now that everything I love is dead all of my books are basically in boxes. But what I am finding is, well, see above.
Gutenberg has more volumes of Atlantic Monthly than African-American writers. Its Africa bookshelf and South Africa bookshelf...well. This is one of those seeing the arrow things. I see the arrow, y'all, and the arrow is pissing me off.
Asia does not have its own bookshelf. Neither does Nigeria. South America's bookshelf exists, but is white, white, white. However, the page for Argentina appears to actually have some writings by Argentinians. People from India get a mixed bag too: why are all the works on Indian folklore by white people?
I know next to nothing about how one might go about de-whitening Gutenberg, although I'm all over that if I eventually find out how. I think I'm going to create a companion post to my 50books_poc reading list, though, & document what I'm able to find by POC on Gutenberg, and where. It may assist some people doing the 50books project in finding free resources. Because, argh.

Super Bonus & Win Update, as of This Writing:
con_or_bust raised $4512 of the $5898 fight_derailing got together to assist 10 FOC in attending Wiscon 33. The program was able to help everyone who asked.
verb_noire expects publication of its first novel in May. They are attending several cons this year, including Wiscon. Offline, the founders have also become involved in Reduce the Rate, the initiative to reduce the rate on student loans to 1%.
Team Fandom is still kicking ass, having raised $4825 for Kiva.
THIS by Us is sticking the course despite serious opposition and deeply troubling behavior on behalf of their program.
250 people helping to fight_derailing. 619 reading 50 books by POC. 124 watching 12 films by POC. People are still writing ReMyths. Lone Star Stories has a poem by tithenai in its latest issue. Cha: An Asian Literary Journal won the Million Writer's Award for best new online magazine, and Lily Hoang and Yoon Ha Lee are only two of the many authors of color who received the award.
Good things are happening right alongside the maddening ones. It's just that the maddening ones are so loud, and their stink gets all over everything.
For now, I'm plotting my own personal Gutenberg Sub-Project and going to bed.
