We met the friendly Taiwanese professor in NDNC, and made friends with his students. They are not the ones that came to SG last year though, but just as friendly. We promised to bring them for buffet if they visit SG. Hahaha...

Us during the poster session. We had forgotten to take a photo with our posters! =(

After the conference, there's this side trip to 九份 and 金瓜石, both are on the eastern side of Taipei county, about 1.5 hr by coach from the city.

金瓜石 was a gold mining town,  but the name originates from the shape of the mountain. It looks like a pumpkin, aka 金瓜. Although after construction and also erosion, I don't think we can see the shape of the pumpkin now.
I think there are more than 10 levels built into the mountain for gold mining and simple purification.

There's not much to do at 金瓜石 except to visit the museum and look at some houses left behind by the Japanese. In the museum, these is the world's largest gold ingot. Everyone keep saying this "If you can life it single-handedly, it's yours."

Heh, everyone sticked their arms in to touch that block of gold, since no one can bring it home.
After 金瓜石, we went to 九份. It's also a small town on the mountain.

We walked along the old streets. There's a lot of food there, including the famous 九份粉园. It's like those tang yuan we had, except it's more chewy. It's quite a nice dessert.

This is the street from which the director of 'Spirited Away' got his inspiration. Shu Chi street. Basically, it's a long staircase.

I think we will probably enjoy 九份 more if we have more time. Then we will sip tea in one of the teahouses with a nice view while we stone. or comtemplate about life haha...
