Important Talk

After yesterday, I re-defined my interest in the law.

OK, it is filled with meaningless rules and most of the time justice does not get served. But if you put your misgivings aside, you will notice that there is beauty and elegance in the methods that some folks use while exploiting the rules.

As an example, look at the way lawyers advise C.E.Os to take advantage of the SEC's Rule 10b5-1; so simple yet so clever. Putting aside anger, this is a work of art that even lay people like us can appreciate. This simple trick allows these assholes not only get away with insider trading, but also save big by deferring capital gains tax.

The following is one of the most brilliant talks I have ever come across - I encountered it about 6 months ago and have watched it multiple times, but it still has not lost its lustre. It is about an elementary topic: the Miranda warning, something all of us have seen in countless Hollywood movies.

Chances are that some of you may have seen this before. It is pretty popular and for good reason: In it, a Law professor gives a mind-blowing argument as to why it is never a good idea to talk to cops without a lawyer present - even if you are innocent. His presentation is followed by that of a police officer who agrees with everything he says, 100%.

Folks who were not perturbed by the court decision mentioned in yesterday's post and who do not think that the system is already loaded in favor of the cops, really need to see it.
