I bought a 10-string bass guitar off of eBay. Bass guitars normally have four strings.
Yes, I'm weird. But this purchase should not be a surprise to those who know me. My instrument collection already contains:
- a Casio MIDI guitar
- a tiny, silicone-rubber-stringed "Ashbory bass"
- a bajo sexto
- a Frumpet
- soprano, baritone, and contrabass members of the G bugle family
The goal with the 10-string bass is to use it as a 'touchstyle guitar'; the most famous example of which is the
Chapman Stick, and the most famous practitioner of which is the bald guy in Peter Gabriel's band sometimes.
It's going to take some work getting there. Korean sweatshops are not exactly known for their stellar luthiery; the action and intonation are lousy, and there's not much that can be done about it. I'll basically have to replace the nut, the bridge, the electronics, and the strings before it's playable. The extra parts could cost as much as I spent on the guitar itself -- but I'll STILL only have spent one tenth of the cost of an actual Chapstick.
Yay, fun project!
