food follies

The woman (who cut) in front of me in line at the Subway-restaurant somehow managed to order almost entirely by color. She got a half-sandwich on "the brown bread" (wheat) containing "that stuff there" (turkey breast) with "white cheese" (American), tomatoes, lettuce, and "green things" (cucumber slices). And she was by all indications a native English speaker. I sometimes forget there are people with such limited functional vocabularies.

Last night cricketnyc and I ate at the new Midtown location of Mandler's. There were corn fritters. Oh yes. But there were also some problems. The cooks didn't seem to know how to prepare the sausages as a platter rather than as a sandwich, and the cashier erroneously charged me for a second topping that was supposed to be included with the platter. And they almost gave me someone else's food, because they apparently don't know the difference between order 18 and 19. There was a beggar I had to raise my voice at, because it wasn't working to tell him politely that I wasn't going to buy anything for him and/or to ignore him.

Maybe people should just prepare their own meals. OH WAIT WE DID THAT TOO. On Wednesday night we improvised a dinner of shrimp and scallops in a white wine sauce with parsley (LOTS of parsley) over linguini, and it was fab-tastic. We should have our own cooking show.
