Every day I'm tumblin.

I am on the toombles now: http://pooryorickdraw.tumblr.com/

So far, I'm surprised at how much I don't hate it! We'll see how it goes.

I promised I wouldn't leave LJ, and I don't intend to. But I find myself reluctant to post stuff here that I've already posted here - partially because I don't want to spam people, and partially because I'm lazy. So I've been trying to figure out how I want to manage both. I think I'll use LJ for things that I want to discuss more, while tumblr will be for briefer posts and junk. I dunno.

At any rate, here are the orc studies I've been doing to start on the art test work I mentioned earlier:

These are based on the examples - I decided that copying would be the best way to practice the designs. (I didn't try to replicate them exactly, though - which is why some of the expressions and hair styles are different.) I have to admit I rather like how they turned out.

The gorilla skulls on there because gorillas seemed like the best model of how these guys are put together. Not sure it helped much, but at least I got a better idea about how their teeth/jaws work.

I decided that I'll do a female shaman and a male cook. (Yes, I know it says to do one or the other, but I want to draw both and see what turns out stronger.) I did some sketches trying to figure out the shaman's pose:

I don't have the proportions right yet - based on the official art, these orcs have a very gorilla-like build: heavy head; broad, barrel-shaped body; very long, muscular arms; and short, thick legs. This makes them look unbalanced unless it's done right. I did one sketch of the shaman with her dressed in layers of draping cloth; I was modeling the costume loosely on pictures of Tibetan shamans. However, the long, loose cloth disguised her body so that she ended up looking totally wonky. I know part of it is that I need to push the anatomy more, but also I think I need to stick to tighter garments so that the orcish build looks solid and not like I messed up standard human proportions.

Anyway, I need to keep working on this and also start on the guard designs too. Hopefully I can make some headway on this project! I got kinda sidetracked by other stuff - you can see the Pottermore nonsense and Changeling sketches on le tumblr.

It's been SO GREAT to actually draw things! This past week, I took a few days off work since I was going to max out on vacation time, and got myself a 4-day weekend. I did a good amount of drawing, which was really satisfying. I mean, I'm still really slow compared to how I used to be, and I still have to be very careful not to strain my body. But I feel like I'm able to produce stuff that I don't hate, and other people seem to like it, and I am so grateful. Drawing during the work week is proving to be a lot harder (I haven't really been able to draw anything so far), but I'm optimistic that I can get it to happen eventually.)

Horseback-getting-on, yeah!
