So I had a 5-pack of marshmallow Peeps in my desk. Coworker S gave them to me a while ago, and I stashed them away for an emergency sugar hit. I think I had them sitting there for about two years or so; I like my Peeps stale, as I find they acquire a pleasing chewiness over time. Anyway, I finally broke them open yesterday, and found that they had transformed! They still looked exactly the same, but they were now hard. I couldn't even tear one off from the group* - I actually needed to break each Peep off with a fork. (It took several firm stabs to detach one.) When I bit into it, it was almost like
honeycomb, solid and brittle but still weirdly light. After a few seconds of chewing, the candy rapidly compressed and stuck to my teeth like toffee.
I have often kept Peeps in the cupboard for years, aging them much longer than this pack in my work desk. But I've never had any of them develop like this, with such a dramatic structural/textural change. Was it the temperature differences in the building? Maybe an unseen puncture in the cellophane wrapping? I don't know! I'm not sure how to replicate this result, so that may have been the first and last time I'll ever have petrified Peeps. Quite an interesting experience.
*I was almost tempted to just gnaw the Peeps while they were all stuck together in one long Peep stick, but since I was at my desk with coworkers all around, opted for a more discreet method.

Boingboing.) I love it. This reminds me of the stuff that people come up with in
Skyrim. It is just incredibly delightful that people figure out these bizarre things and make them happen.
