[The handwriting is unrecognizable, having gone from this to something much closer to this; it's neat as a pin, like someone spent a lot of time working on her penmanship.]It seems like this book is getting messages from other people (or else I don't know where all the words are coming from on the other pages), so I'll try writing a message, too. I'm afraid it's rather impossible to get to your school from here.

I can try to explain the journal, though, if you want.

Well, that'd figure, wouldn't it? First time Ma says I can go in a week and a half, and I go somewhere else.

If you wouldn't mind, I'd appreciate it, Mister.

Yes, I'm afraid that's a depressingly common twist of fate, where Luceti is concerned.

We're currently communicating via the writing function. You should see a couple of buttons off to the side of one of the pages that will let you turn on voice communication or video.

I think I see the buttons. Which one do I press?

Which would you rather use first? Would you prefer we use the journal like a phone or a window?

You can use it like a window?

Yes. I would be able to see you and you would be able to see me.

Show me how to do that [a pause before the next word is written] please.

Of course.

Just press the button labelled "video".

[If she can't figure out how, Giles will give her about ten seconds before he does so himself.]

[Luckily, Kay can find the word, even if it doesn't mean anything to her. Within about five second, her face should appear on his screen: she's small for her age and fairly scrawny, with dark eyes and a head full of red curls, wearing a New Feather dress.]

Did that work, Mister? Can you see me?

Yes, I can. [He smiles and gives a slight wave.] Hello. Can you see me?

[She nods and waves back.]

Thank you, Mister--oh, what's your name?

You as well...

[...wait a second...Giles pauses for a thoughtful frown.]

...Kay.

I take it that someone has already explain the general situation to you, then?

[Nod!]

It's like the land of Oz--Mister Mildmay told me. Except everyone's got wings. [And now she's peering at him curiously.] What colour are yours?
