You know what this place could use? A nightclub.

Don't get me wrong, I like Good Spirits a lot, but you can't exactly go there for dinner and dancing. The pizzeria seems like it has room for musicians, but pizza's not exactly ritzy. Sometimes you just want to go somewhere nice and hear a good band, you know? Putting a Tex Beneke record on just ( Read more... )

We actually have our fair share of musicians here. I can name two guitarists - if you count myself - two jazz pianists, if they're still around, Frederic, and a boy who's quite handy with an ocarina.

...depends what you want in a nightclub, I suppose.

What'd be ideal is if it turned out that this is where Glenn Miller disappeared to. But you know, if we could find a singer, what there is wouldn't be a bad start. Dunno how much you could do with an ocarina--[she's not certain she knows what one is, truthfully]--but guitar and piano are nice. A little bare bones, but not bad at all.

Three singers.

That I know of.

One is a young girl, granted, but she's one of the best I've ever heard.

You might have a future as a talent agent, Rupert. [She, meanwhile, doesn't know much more about music than what she likes, so she's not about to bar anyone from the stage for age.] I figure anyone who wanted to perform would be welcome.

I must say, Kay, that's the first time I've ever heard that particular endorsement.

...well, those singers I do know are myself, Frederic, and a girl named Ranka. If that's any help - between the three of us, I can say we cover a wide variety of genres and time periods.

Frederic might...still be a bit anxious about singing in public, however.

Yeah, well, in a small town, everyone gets to be an expert in odd things.

And I'll be honest, I can barely read music, let alone play it, so I really ought to leave that up to those of you who can. I'm qualified to come and applaud, and that's about it.

Every musician needs an audience. That's more than enough in the way of qualifications.

But if you'd like, I could teach you some basics.

And I'm plenty appreciative, don't worry.

I guess it'd depend on what you wanted to teach me. [She can sing, albeit not well, and that's about it.] But I'd be willing to learn.

I could teach you to read some music. I can't get into anything as complicated as what Frederic can manage, but...well, the sorts of bands that exist in my world might not exist in yours', so I'm not sure how I'd provide credentials for myself.

I can take your word on credentials. Though if you really wanted to prove it, you could always sing something. [Which is meant jokingly, though she is admittedly a little curious about Giles' abilities. She wasn't really expecting them of him.]

[...dead silence for a very long time on Giles' end. He sounds...mildly panicked when he does finally replies. Or, um, maybe not mildly. This is what happens when you get too comfortable with the bantering, Giles.]

...n-now?

[His discomfort is pretty palpable, even without the luxury of speaking face to face, leaving her frowning. Oops.]

Well, not if you're not ready...

[Have the first two verses of "Piano Man", Kay.

...he actually is pretty good.]

[She doesn't know the song, but she can recognize a good voice when she hears it. And it's a pretty catchy tune, whatever it is.]

Hey, that was great! That was really great.

...What's that song?

"Piano Man". Performed by Billy Joel, released in 1973. For one thing, it's probably a bit after your time if it exists in your world at all. For another, it's not...a terribly good song, in my opinion, but it was the first thing that came to me.

Maybe I'll keep an eye out for it in twenty years. It sounds pretty good to me, but maybe you improved on it some. [The discovery that he can sing is a pretty good one! She won't be stingy with the compliments.]
