If your character and Kay need to get together for a personal conversation or some other kind of little-tiny-thing, and we're feeling too lazy to throw up a new post, we can spam it up in here.

[Kay bought--insofar as anyone can buy things here, but "bought" sounds a little better than "pillaged"--a bunch of vegetables, noodles and a chicken the night before, and made sure that the shared kitchen had all the necessary pans. This morning, she doesn't have to worry about anything except grabbing a few books for Hiccup. She picks out a half-dozen, so he's got some variety to choose from--a Louis L'Amour, an Ellery Queen, a collection of Benny's short stories, and a few others--then grabs the anthology of stories she and Julius wrote, in a fit of vanity. For herself, an interesting-looking novel by someone called Kurt Vonnegut, and she's set.
She nearly drops every book she's holding when she comes out into the hallway and sees a great black shape stomping toward her.] Oh--!
...You weren't kidding about the dragon. [Trying to ignore the way her heart's pounding she smiles at the boy--Hiccup, clearly--and his beast, and after a moment or two, her expression won't even look forced. The surprise of finding a dragon in her

Well, if he, ah, gets bored, we can always let him outside.
[Kay considers the dragon for a moment or two, all the while with the odd sense that he's sizing her up just like she's doing to him. Shifting the stack of books to one arm, she tentatively reaches a hand toward him and glances over at Hiccup.] Is it all right if I...?

[And you know, Kay wants to be friends with fire-breathing lizards. Had she known that fish were the way to Toothless' heart, she'd have bought him a whole plate of herring.
Still a bit tentative--how's a woman supposed to write if her right hand ends up bitten off?--she places a hand on Toothless' head, smiling at him (as much for the feeling of a dragon's hide beneath her fingers as anything else).] Well, it's nice to meet you, Toothless. If I ever meet another dragon here, he'll have a lot to live up to. [Because seriously, big black dragon that seems not to be devouring her. This is completely the best.]

[Kay follows suit, a grin spreading over her face at Toothless' reaction. In the back of her mind, she's memorizing the tilt of Toothless' head and the way Hiccup looks down at the creature with what looks like great admiration--a boy and his dragon, that could be a good start to something--but foremost is the satisfaction of petting a dragon.]
Well, we'll have to save some chicken for him when we're done. [And she looks to Hiccup.] You ready to cook?
[Action, May 22]poorneedyandMay 25 2011, 02:26:37 UTC
[Kay's sorry to see Toothless go--she's terribly curious about him--but cooking's only going to take longer if they put it off. When Toothless is on his way out, Kay leads the way over to the community kitchen and to the sink to wash their hands.]
Most of the time, you'd do all this over a few days--roast a chicken one night, use the leftovers for soup another night. But you can fit it in one day, if you start early enough. [She heads over to the icebox and pulls out the chicken, wrapped up in butcher paper.] Since you're the one learning, you get to pull out the heart.

[She can't hide her amusement at this as she turns on the oven.] Just be glad it comes plucked. When I was a girl, I had to help my grandmother remove the feathers.
[Anyway, Kay unwraps the chicken, and...surprise, it's a chicken like any other.] They've probably put them in a little bag, heart, liver and gizzard. Pull that out and set it aside, and I'll get the roasting pan.

[Kay is busy pulling out a pan, an onion, some potatoes, and a few spices, and thus doesn't notice Hiccup's feat of bravery. When she returns to his side, she sets everything down on the counter and glances over to see how he's doing.]
All right, good. We can fry those up for a snack while we're waiting for the chicken, if you want. Now, d'you know how to peel potatoes?
[If you say "yes," Hiccup, you're rinsing the chicken inside and out. Kay's going to make sure you're doing something you're not familiar with. Fair warning.]

[Kay shrugs. They're better in gravy or stuffing, of course, but she's not in the mood to make all that, too. No fried innards it is.]
Maybe we can throw them to Toothless. Anyway, rinse off the chicken, inside and out, and I'll peel the potatoes. Then you'll put it in the roasting pan--on its back--and we'll put in the vegetables and the sage. All right?
