I need to pick up a laptop next week, likely from Best Buy. This is to replace my failing laptop Dell. I've had Dells the last three years and none of them have lasted past a year. My Toshiba Satellite is tough as hell and almost three years old. I think it cost $455 brand new (from newegg.com)

Mine is about 1 1/2 years old, but otherwise, same here--Toshiba Satellite, $450 new, bought from newegg and it's a workhorse.

I had some problems with my Toshiba when I owned one in 2007, but since I see so many good reviews (both on this post and others outside of it), I'm starting to wonder if that was a 'bad egg' situation rather than typical. Mostly the huge problem was my dvd-r and my internet card - it kept killing internet cards over and over. :( We ended up having to get a USB extension.

I second Toshiba and second newegg.com times a billion. I also like Acer and know a lot of people that like Emachines but don't have any personal experience with them.

I do like eMachine, and when I boot up my old eMachine tower from 2000, it still works the same as it did the day I bought it. The running time wasn't the best quality, but it also had low specs.

Ours is a Toshiba house.

I bought mine in April? And it's been a workhorse.

$455 is an amazing price. When I got one from Best Buy in 2007, the guy kept trying to talk us out of Toshiba, but I think he just wanted to sell us a $1000 Dell (no).

This!! I bought my Toshiba Satellite for right under $400 with a great rebate from Office Depot. It's been fantastic!
