Recommended cars - Any hidden gems out there?

I know the most recommended vehicles are Hondas and Toyotas, but it seems everyone else in my area knows that as well. It's very hard to find many available used, and there are so many cheaper cars available I wonder if I might be passing by any other reliable vehicles. I don't mind looking around, but I am wondering if any of you opted for another vehicle because you found a similar situation in your area. I know about the Geo Prizm, which has actually been even harder to find. I am looking for something in the $3000-4000 range.

I would also appreciate any recommended beginner's reading on car maintenance. I come from a family who regularly leases new vehicles, so I am new to the thought of holding onto one until it dies. But I would really like to learn.
