Apartment woes...

I live in an apartment complex on the third floor. The guys below me are chain smokers who LOVE to leave there doors open and even smoke in the hallway. He (the main individual in question) also is very loud and chatty... like the hallways are his own personal home and he's too good to go down the stairs to the main floor to talk to someone at the ( Read more... )

i wish i had an answer for you. i merely wanted to comment to let you know i feel your pain - i moved away from ridiculous potsmokers (meaning they'd smoke so much pot the smoke would waft under my door AND the police were called out to investigate their pot stash more than once) merely to escape the stench.

good luck.

Bath & Body Works make this really powerful room spray. It is expensive--$4 a bottle--but it's REALLY powerful and just two sprays will cover an entire room for a good few hours--I like "Clean Linen" and "Sandalwood Vanilla." Sometimes you get lucky and they're on sale. Could try that for your rooms--as for the clothes, Febreeze in the closet daily?

It's normally $5 a bottle. It does go on sale though--right now it's $3 a bottle. I do think the price is worth it, even at regular price. The bottles are tiny but last much longer than the large kind that you'd get a grocery store. I like Pineapple Orchid.

Not sure that this is really a good long-term solution, and I haven't tested them for covering smoke (or any) smells. Just for making a room smell good when I want a pretty scent, or when it seems kind of musty in the house.

Complain to your apartment managers! Usually that sort of thing is against the rules and they'll handle it for you.

IA! I can't imagine an apartment complex that would allow smoking inside their units due to the $$$ in damage it would do.

I'd try a draftstop on the inside of your apartmendoor, one that goes all the way round. And I'd add something pleasant but strong smelling like coffee grind to the stuffing, but I like crafty challenges. :o)

I have a large fluffy blanket right now. It seems to be helping.

I had this problem with a pot smoker neighbor. Unfortunately, the complaints to the landlady were useless. In retrospect, if they dont listen to your complaints and do something reasonable to fix them, i would contact the BBB to fix the issue. They were able to get my deposit from a delinquent property manager a while back. After weeks of calling and waiting, I put a complaint in with their website. The check was promptly mailed.

My complaints have done pretty much nothing. They tell me they've talked to him and I haven't seen them at the apartment complex, so I don't think they have. I don't even know what the BBB is...

I checked, and the BBB, Better Business Bureau, is in Canada too.
http://www.bbb.org/canada/

I don't have much to add to the already posted comments here, except to check with your city/town government and see what the laws about smoking and apartments are in your area.

As for vinegar, I also recommend it for removing smells. I've used it on carpets and clothing. I've also seen baking soda based detergents and borax recommended online for smells.

Reader's digest recommends 1 cup of vinegar in a load. http://www.rd.com/advice-and-know-how/extraordinary-uses-for-vinegar/article24053-5.html

Another site I found recommended steaming smoky clothes above the bathtub with vinegar and water. http://planetgreen.discovery.com/fashion-beauty/remove-
