TAXES OH MY GOD

Jun 20, 2007 23:49

I'm twenty, don't have a real income (I have a few campus jobs...mail clerk, coffee girl...totals around $200 a month if I'm very lucky), and I have no idea what to do about taxes. I don't know what it means to "do" your taxes, and the only experience I have with that word is the small amount that's automatically deducted from my paycheck before I receive it. I've filed the requisite forms with payroll but I always hear about people stressing out about getting their papers in on time, and I'm wondering if I'm somehow unwittingly committing tax fraud or something!

Do I have to be a certain age, make a certain threshold annual income, or something-or-other, to have to begin doing my taxes? Any idea where to begin? Thank you!

EDIT: I'm still a bit in the dark about being listed as a dependent/deadlines/etc., but thanks to all these helpful comments I got to the Free File page that has all the services you qualify for if you're under the minimum income level. I clicked on TurboTax, which lists $28,500 as the minimum. The Students section on the irs.gov website also has a lot of beginner's tutorials for doing your taxes.
