I read this in a book, and thought that this might interest some here.
STOPPING FLATS
Are you tired of punctured tires and constantly patching flats? Then puncture-proof your tires! Here's how:
Take an old inner tube that's past its prime (ya know, 10 or more patches) and cut through it. Then cut it down the center so it's just a flat piece of rubber.
Then cut the rubber into three inch pieces. Make the width skinny enough so that the pieces fit along the inside of the tire wall, but fat enough so that it covers the area of the tire that touches the ground.
Take these pieces and glue them to the inside of your tire. To glue them in, you can use just about anything that will do the job of sticking them to the tire. The pressure of the inflated tube will keep them in place, so the glue only needs to hold them in place until you get the tube in.
This gives you an extra layer of rubber to stop destructive objects and greatly reduces your risk of a flat.
EDIT: Having written this right after the bicycle post and basically posting this as a response to that, I didn't think to mention that yes, this is about BICYCLE tires. My bad.
