So, if your a part timer working for the City of Tempe, and you work more that twenty hours a week for more than 20 weeks, you have to pay into AZ state retirement fund, 9.6% before taxes.
I am leaving in three months but apparently, my time is up and I have to decide TODAY if I am going to keep my 26-29 hours a week and have retirement taken out OR if I want to cut my hours down to 19.5 a week and have no retirement taken out. So, my options are:
1)become willfully underemployed for the summer
2)pay 120 bucks every two weeks to retirement for the privalage of earning an extra 41 bucks take home.
OH, and BTW, there's a penalty for retrieving your money, so even after I'm done in three months and there's a few hundred in there, I'll get a chunk of that taken out for retrieving it. Who wants to hold on to some retirement fund till they're 60 if it's only gor a few hundred in it?
EDIT: Thanks to everyone who relpied. I'm going with my gut and doing the retirement deductions rather than cut my hours. I'll figure out what to do with the retirement when the time comes. I love this community though! You post with a problem and BOOM! Instant help! You guys are awesome!
