One Character History:
Hyoutei Gakuen is the most prestigious middle school in the Prince of Tennis canon and the main rival of the main school, Seishun Gakuen. The middle school is part of the elevator system of Hyoutei which provides schooling from kindergarten all the way up to university, aimed at the higher class of families. A higher class that Shishido Ryou is not a part of.
The Shishido family is more of a middle class family, leading an average life on an average wage in an average house. Ryou and his older brother are only a part of the Hyoutei school system because of their father who teaches there. As sons of a teacher, they are given scholarships to attend the school at a reduced cost.
Because of their rank, many of the Hyoutei students come across as snobbish arrogant. Though Ryou doesn’t fit the former, he certainly fits into the latter when he is first introduced into the series. A regular singles player in the elite Hyoutei Middle School tennis team, Ryou holds a lot of confidence in everything he does and has never lost a match - the Hyoutei regulars have one chance; if they lose an official match, they are instantly dropped and replaced, destined to never be a regular again. That is, until Hyoutei faces Fudomine and Ryou, the only regular playing in the line up amongst pre-regulars, is faced against the Fudomine captain, Tachibana Kippei, and is faced with a humiliating lost. Per regulation, Ryou is dropped from the team and replaced by a pre-regular.
Ryou takes the loss badly but refuses to give up. Atobe approaches him and tells him that he has come as far as he can in singles, so Ryou seizes an opportunity in the form of another regular on the team: second-year, Ohtori Choutarou, a natural doubles player. Ohtori is well-known in the team for his serve, the Scud Serve, which is the fastest in their age group at almost 200km/h. With the promise to help Ohtori improve his serve, Ryou requests the help of his kouhai to get back on the team.
For two long weeks, Ohtori and Ryou train together relentlessly on the street courts. Ryou demands that Ohtori serve at him over and over again, with the intention of catching the ball with his bare hands. By the time he achieves this, his entire body is bruised and battered and exhausted but Ryou is elated.
The next day, he challenges and defeats another regular, Taki Haginosuke, but is not rewarded in a way he wishes. Another pre-regular is brought in to replace Taki and Ryou is left to beg the coach to be let back on to the team, ending up down on his hands and knees. Ohtori, who has trained with Ryou and seen his determination and drive, adds to Ryou’s pleas, going so far as to offer up his own spot so that his senpai can have it. As Ohtori talks, however, Ryou takes a pair of scissors to his hair and slices off his ponytail as a sign of his resolve and determination to prove himself. Much to Ryou’s surprise, Atobe also puts in his recommendation to have Ryou put back onto the team.
The coach concedes and allows Ryou back onto the team, where he plays as Ohtori’s doubles partner, his newly developed speed complimenting his kouhai’s strength to create a formidable pair that goes undefeated for the rest of the series.
Personality:
As a middle class kid in a rich kid school, Ryou knows the importance of hard work and the pressure of living up to expectations. He often comes across as confident and even arrogant, but there is good reason for him to be so. When Ryou enjoys something, he takes it seriously and puts his all into it. It has always been well-known by the team that Ryou’s training regime was not just limited to what they were put through at training, but also extended to after training hours where he would do intensive practice either by himself against a wall or at the street courts. Despite originally being a singles player, he always had a strong sense of teamwork and understood that there was no point in having an amazing singles player that would always win when the other players of the team couldn’t secure wins as often, and so acted as moral support to the team members and helped them train whenever he needed. When he became a permanent doubles partner to Ohtori, this mindset only strengthened and his extra training adjusted to incorporate his new partner.
Outside of tennis, Ryou has quite a sarcastic humour and, on the surface, seems to not get along well with anyone on his team except his partner and, to a lesser extent, the always sleeping Jirou. Despite his seemingly annoyed attitude toward Gakuto, they are childhood friends and their trio - Ryou, Jirou and Gakuto - are almost as close to each other as Ryou and Gakuto are to their doubles partners. Towards Atobe and Yuushi, he is sarcastic and mocking and always seems to be looking for some way to put them down, despite holding them both in high respects, both on the courts and off.
Towards his friends, Ryou is deathly loyal and he is not afraid to speak his mind or stand up for what he believes in. It has gotten him into trouble more than once, and he has been known to get into minor scuffles for disagreeing with or saying the wrong thing to the wrong person.
Ryou is prideful in every thing he does and in the way he acts and looks, coming across to many as a genuine Hyoutei student despite his background. Before losing his spot on the regulars, one of the most important things to him was his hair, long and flowing like that of a girl’s which he painstakingly cared for. He was proud of how well tended and beautiful his hair was, but a sense of priority and his resolve was enough to override this pride and let him cut his hair short to show just how serious he was about dedicating his everything to tennis and the team. His confidence in everything he does may come across as cockiness at times and though he seems to respond badly to criticism, often times he takes it to heart and considers it, constantly trying to better himself so that he can deserve to be so prideful.
Ryou has moments where his temper is rather short, especially when he is anxious or tired. When he does lose his temper, it’s more a verbal thing, and he can get quite cursive with a tongue to rival a sailor. If he gets worked up enough, he may start getting physically violent and throw a few punches around, but it is very rare that he gets this bad.
Powers:
In canon, Ryou has no powers. Upon arriving, he receives the power of seemingly unbeatable luck, like always getting a winning hand in poker or sinking multiple balls with one shot in pool or that double-yolk egg that everyone loves.

http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/5950/229409.jpgStanding at about 175cm, Ryou is about average stature for Japanese males. After cutting his hair, he has opted to keep it at a manageable but messy short length, usually kept under a baseball cap worn backwards. Out of habit or bad luck due to tennis balls being gravitated there, he often wears a white bandaid over his left temple. He is quite slender, but that’s not to say he is weak. While he can’t lift heavy objects for long periods of time, he has no problem with physical labour thanks to endless training.
Suitability/eligibility:
Ryou is the kind of guy with an unbreakable resolve. Whenever he is faced with a tough situation, he doesn’t let it get him down and he does everything in his power to get himself through it. Despite being proud, he is not proud enough that he will refuse help if needed and, if he realizes that he cannot manage on his own, he will turn to others for help. He does have a bad habit of locking away any feelings of fear or despair, putting on a brave face in front of others and saving breakdowns for when he’s alone, having long decided to put others before himself and to be as supportive to them as possible.
The three magic words are: black sheep sissy
Third-Person Sample:
A hospital.
It had to be a hospital. There was just too much white to be anything but. But that wasn’t what was creeping him out. The room was not just white; it was clean and silent and empty. So very, very empty… It sent a chill down Ryou’s spine and made him shudder. There was something very wrong with this place - apart from the fact that it was a hospital and hospitals were just bad news full-stop.
Cautiously, Ryou swung his legs off the bed he was lying on and slowly rose to his feet. There had to be someone somewhere nearby. He made for the door, bare feet moving soundless on the cold floor. With a deep breath, he closed his fingers on the door-knob and pulled it open. Another chill ran down Ryou’s spine. He stepped out of the room and looked first left then right. “Great,” he mumbled, his voice bouncing off the walls. “Just what I need.” The halls were white and just proved his theory to him that this was a hospital, albeit a quite one. He could’ve sworn he heard voices, though. They were just faint and coming from end of the hallway. Maybe whoever that was could explain what the hell was going. Without another thought, Ryou began his way down the hall to find the source of the voices and a way out of this goddamn place.
First-Person Sample:
[Static fills the screen for a brief moment before fading to reveal the face of a young teenage boy staring intently into the camera.] Ya fin’lly workin’ now? Stupid thing. [The boy lifts his head for a moment and looks around.] Yo, anyone there?
[There is a long drawn out silence as the boy intently stares in one spot as though waiting for something to appear off screen before finally returning his attention to the camera.]
Wha’ the hell is goin’ on? Wha’s this place? [He runs a hand through short, messy brown hair, obviously a little distressed.] Choutarou… Gakuto, Jirou… Atobe… If any ‘f ya ge’ this… call me or somethin’. Le’ me know ya okay. I’m… goin’ down t’ the cafeteria t’ see ‘f I can’ fig’re ou’ wha’s happenin’.
[The boy continues to stare at the camera for a moment longer before it bleeps and the image is replaced with static and then a blank screen.]
Anything else? Ryou’s catchphrase ‘Gekidasadaze’ generally translates to so lame, and he will probably end up using it later as he becomes more accustomed to care about much else.
