It's terrible, but Kellan has never had a "real" birthday party!
This year I committed to making it happen.
I volunteer in Kellan's class and know that this year all of the kids are super-into Mo Willems.
We picked that as his theme and ran with it.
I asked Kellan if he wanted to invite his whole class (and prayed that the answer would be "no") or if he wanted to keep it all boys.
Kellan was quick and decisive in his response. In the blink of an eye he had created a precise list of twelve classmates, both boys and girls, and never did he deviate from his choices.
It was a little hectic trying to get it all done in the middle of student teaching, end of the year activities, sports, etc., but somehow I pulled it off (even taking a shower TWENTY MINUTES before guests were to arrive).
Eliza and one of her friends organized a scavenger hunt (thank you, girls!!) and one of my best friends came over and served as my helper/emotional support. We had a bouncy house and of course, our two trampolines to keep them otherwise occupied. I know all of the kids very well from working in the classroom all year and I have to say, they are a wonderful bunch - so sweet and polite and happy.
All of the girls' moms said that their daughters we SO excited about this particular party because it was their first boy/girl event.
Adorable!
I have no more kid birthdays until Hayden turns 16 (ACK!) in August....which gives me just enough time to recover!
