Lucky Rudolph

I know you are supposed to feel badly when the song, "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer"  says that, "they didn't let poor Rudolph join in any reindeer games", but I'm feeling a little differently after this week.

Our Crossfit Gym is holding its annual "Reindeer Games" series of workouts.  Every day, instead of our usual programming, we come in and do two back-to-back workouts, each named after one of Santa's reindeer.  There are three different scaling options so that everyone can participate at a level that is comfortable for them, but you are encouraged to try and compete at a level where you find yourself solidly challenged.  When we did these games last year I was only a few months into Crossfit, so I did the easiest scaling possible and didn't really worry about being a winner in any category, even the bottom!

Well, one year later, my competitive edge might have kicked in just a little.  Obviously I'm fitter and a lot more skilled at some of the movements, but I'm also at the point where I realize that maybe I can push myself just a little bit harder in the spirit of of the games.  And if I can best a couple of my gym-mates along the way, even better.  After all, nothing says "Happy Holidays" like a little trash talk...and the gift of giving.  After 4 days and 8 workouts, here's what I've "given" myself.  (WARNING:  It's a little bit ugly):

1)  Arms that look like this:

I'm getting pretty good with my jump-roping, but when I miss?  I miss hard.  And all over my arms.

2)  Hands that look like this:

Crossfit is hard on the hands on a good day, but during a week like this one?  Ouch.

Ugly injuries aside, I have to admit, I might be having just a little bit of.....fun?  Call it discomfort and joy!

Tomorrow is the end of the games and we finish up with the "Rudolph" and "Santa" workouts.

I'm hoping that Rudolph isn't so bitter about his exclusion from the Reindeer Games that he plans a workout of vengeance....although I'm pretty sure Santa's workout won't include any cookies OR milk.

hard things, crossfit, holiday fun, everyday life
