I also believe that we essentially do this very thing in our own inner eyes. We look in the mirror and distort our own perception of ourselves to fit our beliefs about ourselves, that we are or are not pretty, that we are or are not fat. And, I think we also look on our fellow human beings and distort them as well. We don't really actually look at each other. Maybe artists who render people in realistic ways do that -- look with a clean and undistorted eye, a nonjudgmental eye, but as for the rest of us, we cannot help but to distort according to our own inner beliefs. And so while I think we need to be aware that commercial advertising uses manufactured images, it is only dangerous if we do not remind ourselves of that, and if we do not also accept that we also do it.
