This past month has been all about distractions, I've pretty much lived inside Paint Shop Pro. Inspired by
schweedie's television characters picspam, I decided I'd do my top ten musical characters.
Ten. Seymour
Poor, all my life I've always been poor.
I keep asking God what I'm for.
And he tells me, "Gee, I'm not sure."
Nine. Dorothy
If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow
Why, oh why can't I?
Eight. Elphaba
One question haunts and hurts
Too much, too much to mention
Was I really seeking good
Or just seeking attention?
Seven. Dianna
I'm nauseous and I'm constipated
Completely lost my appetite and gained six pounds
Which, you know, is just not fair.
Six. Hedwig & Yitzhak
Know in your soul
Like your blood knows the way
From your heart to your brain
Knows that you're whole
Five. Nadia
Sadness, who me sad?
A quiet night at home, my favourite place
Four. Collins & Angel
Are we a thing?
Darling, we're everything
Three. Jon
I want to write music
I want to sit down right now at the piano
And write a song that people will listen to and remember
And do the same thing every morning for the rest of my life
Two. Jason & Peter
You know we can't go on forever this way
All this 'forever', can't you live for today?
We have to grow up, there's so much more to love.
One. Mark
Why am I the witness?
And when I capture it on film
Does it mean that it's the end and I'm alone?
[ I've come to realise my top ten musical characters actually say quite a bit about me, not sure what though exactly. Three couples destined to break my heart and seven others who in some way or another I see a small part of myself in. Of the couples, Jason and Peter had to place highest as I'm all about the tragedy. Which also covers why Angel and Collins are up there, I've longed to discover something as true as this is. Hedwig and Yitzhak are the more disfunctional of the couples but with the more rare, happier ending.
Moving on to the individuals, Little Shop of Horrors and Wizard of Oz played a part in my early exposure to musical theatre so it was only right to include Seymour and Dorothy. A little odd then to include the Wicked Witch of the West straight after but this is a list from a girl who roots for Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar. Next to Normal is the only show I've seen that has dealt with mental illness so well. While I can't say I see a lot of myself in Nadia (Bare), A Quiet Night at Home could be the theme song to my late teens. Jonathan Larson played such a part in my early twenties that Jon had to place high up. So then, finally, it was only ever going to be Mark. I don't think I've related to a fictional character more.]
