I just wonder what English teachers actually teach these days. Because from what I've seen on t'interweb, it's definitely not basic grammar and spelling.

They *do* learn basic grandma & speeling, it's just that most of them don't think it applies to them. They teach them stuff like ellipsis in year 5, FFS!

I'm still very much of the opinion that keeping kids back if they fail the basics of a year would improve things no end.

Oh, I don't know. It's like having to remember that capital letters are not an optional extra when writing pretty much anything at all. Even when you spend time going through it with the little cherubs, 30 seconds later they hand in an exercise with nary a capital to be seen. And the point of the fecking exercise is to put them in where they need to be!
