I found out today that
Patsy Ramsey died of ovarian cancer recently. She was, if you're not certain where you've heard the name before, the mother of JonBenet Ramsey, the American beauty pageant girl who was murdered in 1996. I can't believe it happened 10 years ago, but there we are - time flies!
This case, perhaps more than any other, brought home to me how vicious trial by media can be, and how dangerous it is for a police force to be so convinced it has found its killer it tries to make the evidence fit their theory rather than being open minded and accepting that, perhaps, they've got it wrong. Even after police found DNA on JonBenet's body that didn't match any of the family, there are still those who will not be convinced that they had nothing to do with it.
I hope she's finally able to rest in peace, having spent the past 10 years not only fighting cancer, but fighting the endless speculation that she was in some way involved in her daughter's murder. Apparently she was buried next to JonBenet. If there's any truth in an afterlife, I hope they've been happily reunited somewhere.
