Ok, so I was having a conversation with someone and we had a little conflict at first, but at the end of the conversation we saw things eye to eye. I was talking about education and sameness vs equality, and the person said that every student should be treated the same no matter what. Well, I don't agree. Equality is important, but sameness is completely different and it shouldn't be something that we expect from our students. In an integrated classroom especially, this is important. Treating all children the same will only handicap students. If you have a class that has diversity in the way of learning, you can't have the SAME goals for every child to learn material. If you have a child on an IEP (individualized education plan) and a gifted child, they obviously aren't going to learn the SAME thing at the SAME pace. But you should treat them all equally and give them all equal chance to learn and succeed. That's why adaptations are so important. Adapting lessons and material and your classroom for the benefit of ALL students is what is important, not getting them all to sing the alphabet backwards and forwards in a minute.
Sorry for that little "educational" blurb, but I had to say it.
It's the third weekend of being here at Mount, and already we have freshmen going home every weekend. HELLO!!! Being on res life especially has helped me see that the more people go home on weekends, the more likely they are to not make it through the semester. Not that that happens with everyone, I'm just saying. I'm hoping some of the more shy girls will start staying more soon so that we can all get to know them better and so that they can start to fit in a little bit more.
I need to vaccuum my floor... it's covered in glitter from my poster right now. But at least the poster is mostly done! I've gotten a lot of work done today, and I have a few more things to finish tonight, so I'm kinda proud of myself. It was storming earlier, and I couldn't really concentrate on my work because I'm kind of afraid of lightening and thunder. yikes! But earlier, I was actually enjoying it... that's a new thing for me. But it's done now, so that's good.
I'm happy, no class on Monday... except for band, but that doesn't count in my mind right now lol.
Well, back to the books for me kids, later gators!
