It's been a long time! I have been hard at work on the mega costume on the only two days I have off of the week. To add to that, I've also been spending time learning beginning American Sign Language. I learned some of it when I was a kid and my sister was taking college courses on it. I attended a "sign-only" dinner with her, where she hastily taught me signs as we sat in the car in the parking lot. So I'd like to continue on that and we have people who come in at work occasionally who sign. I'd like to be able to communicate with them. We have a course offered at work that is tailored for my job, but it doesn't start at the beginning and doesn't include culture or language tips. I've been taking the Sign Language 101 courses instead, offered on Youtube.
Speaking of costumes, we're going to be offering workshops on creating costumes at work and I'm expected to attend those, being one of the resident sewers. I was told that I would be allowed to wear a costume that fell within our casual clothing rules. This of course meant that I, as Harry Nilsson would say, jumped into the fire. As I always do. You know, or else you'll never be free. Little did my dad know that introducing me to Nilsson Schmilsson at such an indelible age would make it a life creed for me.
We have four workshops. I have four costumes planned. For the final day, I will wear the piece de resistance, the mega costume. That makes 5 costumes planned for October.
In order to ensure that I don't pass out from over-working myself, there are a couple of repeats I plan to use. I'll wear the Lydia Deetz costume again because it's comfy and easy to wear. I have a casual Sailor Mars hoodie that I'll wear with a bunch of the accessories I made or bought. And I have enough pieces in my closet to cobble together a Daria Morgendorffer costume. The last two costumes are secrets for now because they're special.
In fact, the fourth costume, I intended to sew. I thought if I could finish the special project early, I could easily sew the last one. But sewing isn't cheap. Purchasing a costume is usually cheaper than sewing one. And I did find it online for much cheaper than fabric costs. Plus, I would keep myself from multiple headaches as I tried to quickly finish it and berate myself for the sloppy sewing. So, no shame in buying a costume.
I did try to search for the fourth costume on Spirit Halloween. It was there, and in my size, but I prefer not to purchase from a website that has 12 pages of small to large sizes and only 2 pages of plus-size costumes. It's ridiculous. If indie sewing pattern companies can change, so can you Spirit Halloween. Anyway, rant over.
5 costumes then. Wish me luck.
